The solution incorporates the Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer, Valmet Advanced Process Controls, and Valmet PlantTriage.

FINLAND – Finnish firm Valmet has won a contract to provide an advanced automation system to Klingele Paper & Packaging’s Weener mill in northern Germany.
The setup aims to cut surface starch and energy use while boosting efficiency.
The package integrates the Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer, Valmet Advanced Process Controls, and Valmet PlantTriage with the mill’s existing Valmet DNA, Quality Control System, and Paper Lab.
This creates a loop for ongoing data analysis and process tweaks.
In a statement, Valmet Automation Solutions senior sales manager Martin Grundmann said: “Three automation solutions will be integrated into the customer’s current automation systems supplied by Valmet.”
“The total solution will create an optimisation loop which continuously collects and analyses data to refine key process variables.”
Klingele Paper Weener operations manager Johannes Reiners noted that the project focuses on slashing surface starch consumption, which in turn reduces water and steam needs for drying.
He added: “We are committed to improving our environmental performance continuously. Taking this new step in digitalisation will help us on that journey.”
The mill produces 270,000 tonnes of corrugated base paper each year, using recycled wastepaper for items like testliner, flute paper, and flexliner.
Valmet recorded the order in its second-quarter 2025 intake, though the value remains undisclosed.
Recent expansions in automation
According to recent announcements, Valmet has also supplied automation systems to Papertech Industries in Bangladesh.
The delivery, set for the fourth quarter of 2025, includes Valmet DNA systems for distributed control, information management, and condition monitoring to enhance operations at the new mill.
Just last week, Valmet agreed to provide two fine papermaking lines with automation to a Chinese client.
These lines will produce uncoated woodfree grades, with startups planned from late 2026 to early 2027.
Such initiatives highlight ongoing efforts in the paper sector to adopt digital tools for resource savings. The Weener project aligns with Klingele’s focus on sustainable production from recycled materials.
Valmet’s recent deals span Asia and Europe, addressing demands for efficient packaging solutions amid rising environmental standards.
