Valmet to supply containerboard technology for Cheng Loong machine in Vietnam

VIETNAM – Finnish company Valmet will provide Cheng Loong Binh Duong Paper Co. with key process technology for its new containerboard machine 23 at the company’s Ben Cat mill in Binh Duong province, southern Vietnam.

Valmet’s delivery will include approach flow systems, headboxes, a press section, a sizer, process air systems, a winder, automation systems, and industrial Internet solutions, the Finland-based company announced Wednesday.

The companies have not disclosed the financial details of the deal, but orders of this size are typically worth between €20m (US$19.1m) and €30m (US$28.7m).

OptiPress features a double nip press with a linear web run and modern shoe press technology.

Valmet will also deliver OptiSizer Film to improve sizing and an OptiWin Drum two-drum base winder to meet BM 23’s production requirements, as well as a TurnFloat web turning to optimize the machine’s runnability.

In addition, Cheng Loong has ordered a Valmet DNA Machine Control System, a Valmet IQ Dilution Profiler, IQ Moisturiser and MD/CD controls to improve BM 23’s end-product quality.

The company’s new 7.25m-wide machine is located at the company’s Ben Cat mill in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam.

The machine will produce recycled liner and kraft top testliner with a basis weight range of 140g/m²–300g/m².

Valmet board and paper mills Sales Director Marko Oinonen said: “The containerboard market is growing globally, driven by e-commerce and new packaging applications. Valmet has developed several innovative solutions to meet market needs.

“Our technical highlights and the production potential of the containerboard machine were the decisive factors for Cheng Loong.

“Valmet’s previous successful deliveries to Cheng Loong (the latest in Vietnam and Taiwan) have proved it can respond to their requirements.”

Since its inception in 2013, Valmet has been developing and supplying process technologies, automation and services for the pulp, paper and energy industries.

In December last year, the firm was contracted to provide a quality control system for a flexographic printing machine owned by Chinese company Lamipak (Kunshan).

Meanwhile, Cheng Loong runs five paper mills and 19 box plants in Taiwan, mainland China, and Vietnam and distributes products worldwide.

Its annual production capacity is 2.10 million tons of paper and paperboard, and more than 1.7 billion square meters of paper container boxes, according to the company.
