SOUTH AFRICA – Vesconite Bearings, a leading manufacturing company, strides significantly towards sustainability with an extensive solar energy initiative at its Free State-based facility in South Africa.

Under the leadership of Factory Manager Robin Crabb and CEO Dr. Jean-Patrick Leger, the project entails substantial investments in solar infrastructure, aiming to diminish the factory’s reliance on the power grid while amplifying its environmental impact.

As of mid-November, Phase I of the project stands at 80% completion, featuring the installation of steelwork to support 325 kVA of solar panels.

Simultaneously, Phase II is underway, encompassing the installation of an additional substation, generators, inverters, and an uninterrupted power supply system.

Phases I and II are slated for completion by the end of 2023, with Phase III, geared towards doubling solar capacity, scheduled to commence by late December.

Further consideration is being given to a 1 MW battery system for energy storage during peak consumption periods, aligning with Vesconite Bearings’ vision for a ‘lights-out’ facility that operates around the clock. In tandem, security enhancements involve the installation of a 1.8 m electric fence around the solar system.

CEO Dr. Jean-Patrick Leger expressed optimism, stating, “Our goal is to diminish reliance on traditional energy sources, curtail costs, and substantially reduce our carbon footprint.”
