GERMANY – Xaar has launched Versatex Black, a printbar for black 1D and 2D variable data printing on analogue label presses and finishing lines, allowing converters to add traceability codes, serialisation, personalisation, authentication codes, and supply chain tracking without altering existing workflows.
The system is built to print 1D and 2D barcodes as well as human-readable codes.
The launch comes as businesses prepare for coding changes linked to GS1 Sunrise 2027, which will transition standard barcodes to serialised 2D codes capable of carrying more information than traditional UPCs.
Traceability is gaining importance in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, where regulators and retailers increasingly require item-level tracking.
A Plug-and-Play Solution for Analogue Lines
Label converters operating flexographic or offset presses face a choice when customers request variable data: invest in a full digital press, outsource the variable data work, or add a digital module to an existing line.
Versatex Black integrates into existing analogue lines, printing variable black information, batch numbers, expiry dates, serialised QR codes, on labels after the primary print is complete.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 Readiness
Xaar has been named a GS1 UK Approved Partner, confirming that Versatex Black can produce GS1-compliant barcodes at production speeds.
The GS1 Sunrise 2027 program will switch standard barcodes to serialised 2D codes that can be scanned at checkout and by consumers with smartphones.
For label converters, the deadline is not optional; retailers will refuse shipments without compliant codes. Versatex Black allows converters to meet the requirement without scrapping existing flexo or offset presses.
Technology Behind the Printbar
The product uses Xaar’s inkjet technologies, including High Laydown capability and TF Technology, to maintain stable delivery of black inks at high speed.
Consistent ink flow is critical for barcode readability: a broken bar or smeared character can make a code unscannable, causing supply chain delays and chargebacks.
Xaar product manager Tom Mooney explained that Versatex Black has been developed to help converters add high-quality variable data digitally within their existing processes.
He noted that as traceability and compliance requirements continue to grow, particularly with GS1 Sunrise 2027 approaching, the system gives converters a practical way to deliver clear, consistent 1D and 2D codes at production speed while also opening up new opportunities for digital connectivity and consumer engagement.
