Boretech, ECC partner on Africa’s first PET tray washing line in Egypt

EGYPT – Boretech has partnered with the Egyptian Chinese Company to deliver Africa’s first dedicated 4,000 kg/h PET tray washing line in Egypt, processing post-consumer trays into high-quality PET flakes for tray-to-tray recycling.

The project, announced on 6 August 2026, adopts Boretech’s PET Tray Washing System, featuring thorough material loosening, intensive hot washing, and enhanced yield technologies to process highly compacted materials with minimal breakage. 

Egypt’s new Waste Management Law and the rollout of the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme have made post-consumer PET trays from fresh food and industrial packaging an increasingly important resource for plastic recycling. 

Consulting Engineer Tarek Abdelmawgoud provided strategic counsel during project planning, with Boretech’s innovative recycling technologies and extensive project experience giving ECC confidence in the collaboration. 

Technical Challenges and Solutions for PET Tray Recycling

PET trays are challenging to recycle due to their highly compacted de-baling, complex composition, and use of adhesive labels and glue. 

Boretech’s system addresses these challenges through its advanced washing technology that loosens compacted materials while minimising material breakage. 

Mahmoud Samir, Owner of ECC, stated that Boretech’s innovative recycling technologies and extensive project experience in PET recycling gave ECC great confidence in the collaboration, with the project expected to ensure reliable implementation and strengthen the long-term partnership in advancing PET circularity. 

Egypt’s circular economy initiatives are increasingly focused on diverting packaging waste from landfill, with new legislation and regulatory frameworks creating a market for recycled materials. 

The project is the first dedicated PET tray washing line in Africa and the Middle East, representing a significant milestone in the region’s recycling infrastructure and supporting Egypt’s transition to a circular economy for packaging materials.

Strategic Importance for Egypt’s Circular Economy

The new line will process post-consumer PET trays into high-quality PET flakes suitable for tray-to-tray recycling, closing the loop for this challenging packaging format. 

Boretech has established a strong presence in the Egyptian market with previous installations including a complete 6,000 kg/h PET bottle recycling plant in Port Said. 

The ECC project leverages Boretech’s experience with tray washing systems developed for other global markets, adapting the technology to local waste streams and processing conditions. 

The partnership between Boretech and ECC demonstrates the potential for technology transfer and knowledge sharing in Africa’s developing recycling sector.
