Kyocera to launch circulating inkjet printhead for packaging

Accommodating higher-viscosity formulations for tactile effects, textured varnishes, and functional coatings, the range gives print providers greater flexibility in premium packaging finishes.

JAPAN – Kyocera Corporation will begin commercial sales of its KJ4A-EX600RC-HX inkjet printhead in November 2026, a unit designed for packaging and labelling operations handling white fluid, varnish and foil embellishments.

The hardware incorporates an internal channel layout that moves fluid adjacent to the nozzles.

This continuous movement prevents particle sedimentation, stops fluid from drying and stabilises operating temperatures.

Consequently, the mechanism maintains uniform ejection when handling heavily pigmented or high-viscosity fluids while lowering cleaning and servicing requirements following operational pauses.

For converters running white ink or metallic effects, sedimentation has historically caused nozzle dropout and inconsistent coverage, making circulation a practical requirement rather than a refinement.

Droplet Capacity Rises 23 Percent to 21 Picolitres

Compared with the prior KJ4A-AL model, maximum droplet capacity has expanded by 23 percent to 21 picolitres.

This increase raises white ink opacity over underlying substrates and facilitates thicker three-dimensional layers during varnishing and foil application.

Higher droplet volume allows converters to achieve opaque white coverage in fewer passes, improving throughput on dark or coloured substrates where multiple print layers would otherwise be required.

Viscosity Tolerance Widens to 8–11 mPa·s

Operating viscosity tolerances have widened from the previous 6–7 mPa·s to 8–11 mPa·s, broadening the selection of fluids usable for specialised surface textures and digital methods.

This range accommodates the higher-viscosity formulations often used for tactile effects, textured varnishes and functional coatings, giving print providers greater flexibility when specifying decorative finishes for premium packaging.

Frequency Doubles to Support 100 Metres Per Minute

The printhead features an operating frequency of 40 kHz, double the 20 kHz specification of the KJ4A-AL, enabling line speeds of up to 100 metres per minute. Kyocera said this rate ranks among the highest within its UV-compatible range.

For production environments, higher frequency translates directly into throughput, allowing digital embellishment to keep pace with conventional printing lines rather than becoming a bottleneck.

For the fiscal period ending 31 March 2026, Kyocera reported consolidated revenue of ¥2.07 trillion (US$13.7 billion).

The launch reflects continued investment in digital embellishment technology as packaging converters seek to combine short-run flexibility with decorative finishes previously achievable only through analogue processes.
