To display recycled composition while keeping legibility and standard brand colours, Kärcher’s packaging used a multi-colour digital process over a white base layer.

AUSTRIA – Mondi has created a brown paper packaging format using digital printing techniques for Kärcher’s S 4 Twin Go!Further push sweeper, a cleaning appliance incorporating 30 percent recycled plastic across its components.
Kärcher sought packaging that displayed the equipment’s recycled composition while preserving visual legibility and standard brand colours.
To address these requirements, the production process applied a multi-colour digital method over a white base layer.
This approach allowed graphics, imagery and Kärcher’s yellow colour to appear clearly on the brown paperboard while maintaining definition for fine typography and European Article Number barcodes.
Achieving accurate colour on uncoated brown board poses a recurring challenge for packaging printers, since the substrate’s natural tone shifts ink appearance unless a base layer is applied first.
Plate-Free Printing Aligns Volume With Order Demand
The production setup uses direct computer-to-print systems without printing plates, allowing packaging volume to be aligned with order demand to avoid excess inventory.
Eliminating plate production removes the fixed costs and lead times that make short runs uneconomical in conventional printing, giving brands flexibility to adjust packaging quantities in line with actual sales rather than committing to minimum print volumes.
The boxes are printed with water-based inks certified by Swiss Quality Testing Services for primary packaging use.
Brand Cites Sustainability Visibility Without Design Compromise
Janis Walker, buyer packaging lead at Kärcher, said that as a long-standing partner, the company particularly valued Mondi’s ability to translate requirements for brand impact and sustainability into packaging solutions that worked in practice.
Walker added that for the launch of the new push sweeper, Mondi helped make the sustainability concept of the product visible on the packaging without compromising colour reproduction, design quality or brand presence.
Earlier Project Cut Corrugated Grades by More Than 75 Percent
Last month, Mondi created a revised packaging approach for Stiebel Eltron’s water heater products, cutting the number of corrugated board grades used by more than 75 percent while keeping product protection in place.
The change applies to packaging for instantaneous water heaters and small storage units shipped worldwide, where approximately 150 corrugated packaging versions were used previously.
Both projects illustrate how digital printing and specification consolidation reduce complexity for manufacturers managing varied product ranges and sustainability commitments across European markets.
