Avery Dennison introduces AD Minidose U9XM to transform pharmaceutical packaging

USA – Avery Dennison has unveiled the AD Minidose U9XM, a UHF RFID inlay and tag designed to uniquely identify small pharmaceutical and healthcare items such as syringes, vials, and various packaging formats.

These inlays’ primary applications include source tagging, end-to-end traceability, and product authentication.

The AD Minidose U9XM, approved for healthcare applications by Auburn University’s RFID lab, is one of the smallest inlays available and meets ARC category S standards for pharmaceutical and healthcare use.

The inlay’s higher memory capacity allows converters, system integrators, healthcare providers, and pharmaceutical and medical device OEMs to directly store additional product information, such as expiry dates and batch/lot numbers, on the item.

This feature ensures reliable access to critical data at any point in the supply chain without constant cloud lookups, improving tracking efficiency and dependability.

The availability of this information helps verify product authenticity. According to the company, it reduces the risk of counterfeit goods entering the supply chain, ultimately supporting efforts to enhance patient safety and care quality.

The NXP U9XM chip, integrated into the inlay, offers a self-adjust feature that enhances product performance.

It provides high read reliability even when small, tagged items are densely packed in close proximity.

The AD Minidose U9XM is available in various memory sizes, ranging from 96 to 496-bit EPC memory, offering flexibility in encoding, read speed, security, cost, standard certification, and interoperability.

Mathieu De Backer, Vice President of Innovation and Sustainability at Avery Dennison Smartrac, stated, “We continue to see a growing demand for small, subtle inlays and tags with high memory, particularly for pharmaceutical and healthcare applications.

“Combining this provision with long-range readability makes the AD Minidose U9XM ideally suited to environments where product authentication and traceability are essential.”

Industrial inlays featuring the Impinj M830 Chip

In addition, Avery Dennison recently launched the AD Dogbone and AD Squarewave, its first UHF RFID inlays and tags for industrial applications featuring the Impinj M830 chip.

These inlays are optimized for maximum performance across automotive, logistics, and industrial environments.

According to Avery Dennison’s stringent quality standards, the new AD Dogbone and AD Squarewave inlays and tags have undergone thorough testing and validation.

The AD Dogbone M830, a next-generation variant, offers stronger global performance than previous models.

It retains its 94 x 24mm antenna footprint and features a 97 x 27mm form factor with a 1.18-inch pitch. This inlay is suitable for tagging automotive and logistics items, with main applications including inventory, supply chain management, and Returnable Transit Items (RTIs).

Similarly, the new AD Squarewave M830 inlay provides stronger global performance than its predecessors, maintaining the same 93 x 11mm antenna footprint.

It also features a 97 x 15mm form factor with a 0.78-inch pitch, designed for tagging items in the logistics and automotive sectors.

Its primary applications include home essentials, inventory, and supply chain management. The inlay also ensures reliable tag reading at high volume and speed, supporting global IoT deployments.

Mathieu De Backer remarked, “The ongoing evolution of our portfolio offers clients the reliable, cost-effective, and value-driven solutions they require. Our leading design expertise and advanced manufacturing processes, coupled with the technology of the Impinj M800 chip family, reaffirm our inlays and tags as innovation drivers in industrial environments.

“Crucially, this exciting development enables high-speed readings, allowing our clients to focus more on their key business priorities.”
