UK – British multinational universal bank, Barclays has inked a deal with CLUBZERØ to offer an on-site reusable cups program at the Wimbledon tennis championships.
Barclays customers will be served free juices in the Deuce Bar – a collaboration with CLUBZERØ will see reusable cups washed and re-distributed daily throughout the tournament.
CLUBZERØ claims its returnable packaging service offers a ‘zero waste’ solution that cuts CO2 emissions by 50%.
Safia Qureshi, chief executive of CLUBZERØ, said: “Thrilled to be supporting one of the world’s greatest sporting events in achieving zero waste. Through our partnership with Barclays, visitors will enjoy every serve with zero waste.
“This partnership is exclusively launching at the Barclays Clubhouse (Deuce Bar) this year with the new CLUBZERØ product line for cold beverages, saving an estimated 70,000 single-use plastic items and 1.05tns of CO2 emissions across the tournament.”
Meanwhile, Campaigners are urging Wimbledon to drop Barclays sponsorship as they claim the bank is ‘financing and profiting from climate chaos.’
Richard Curtis, Emma Thompson and Deborah Meaden are among celebrities who have called on Wimbledon to end its new partnership with Barclays over the bank’s multibillion-pound support for fossil fuel projects.
As the 2023 championships get underway, the group claims the sponsorship deal, reportedly worth at least £20m a year, is damaging the club’s reputation.
In an open letter to Sally Bolton, the chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), the campaigners said: “Put simply, Barclays is financing and profiting from climate chaos, and accepting a sponsorship deal from them is an endorsement of these actions.”
The multi-year partnership was announced in November with Barclays replacing HSBC after 15 years. Curtis and the letter’s other signatories argue that the deal is “inconsistent with Wimbledon’s cultural legacy and environmental policies.”
In recent years, the club has announced a range of sustainability measures and set ambitious targets to mitigate the climate crisis.
Earlier, the club in collaboration with evian, the Official Water of The Championships, announced their first ever on-court refillable system, as a new way to hydrate players on court during The Championships.
The new refillable system aims to encourage refill behavior on court, as players will be provided with their own reusable bottles that can be refilled with Evian water on-court and at designated player areas including practice courts, dressing rooms and restaurants.
