BOAD backs CBPP with US$8.31M loan for solid waste recovery in Ahozon

BENIN – The West African Development Bank (BOAD) has approved a loan of 5 billion CFA francs (US$8.31 million) to Compagnie béninoise de production polypropylène (CBPP) for solid waste recovery.

With this funding, CBPP intends to begin construction of its solid waste recovery plant at Ahozon, in the Ouidah council in southern Benin. The future facility will be built on a four-hectare site.

The Ahozon plant will convert solid waste into secondary raw materials, in particular granules. Granules made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) will be used, for example, in the manufacture of fleece clothing, shopping bags, furniture, drinks cans and carpets.

According to CBPP, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) will be used to make yoghurt pots, pens and construction materials, while vinyl will be used to make packaging for detergents, pipes and medical equipment.

The quantity of secondary raw materials produced per day will depend on the capacity of the solid waste recovery plant, adds the company.

Although data on the capacity of the future facility and the construction company selected for the project are not yet available, CBPP has indicated that its approach will help to reduce pollution in Ahozon and the Ouidah council.

Société de gestion des déchets solides et ménagers du Grand-Nokoué (SGDS-GN) will supply the solid waste for processing at the Ahozon plant.

The initiative will also contribute to Benin’s economic growth through the development of a solid waste recycling industry.

In addition, this initiative will provide jobs for men and women who will first have to be trained, in particular in the collection, sorting and recycling of solid waste in Benin, to create wealth.

In the West African country, the circular economy is gradually being adopted through the construction of solid waste recycling plants and the tightening of waste management standards.

The initiative comes a few months after waste collection billing came into effect in January 2023 in the councils of Cotonou, Sèmè-Podji, Porto-Novo, Ouidah and Abomey-Calavi.

The initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to the problem of urban sanitation to improve public health, the well-being of the population and reduce the harmful impact of the proliferation of waste on the environment.
