SWEDEN – Swiss technology group Bühler and Swedish climate tech company Improvin’ have formed a strategic alliance to drive sustainability within the food industry.
Through collaborative projects, both organizations will empower food producers with the tools needed to accurately calculate and communicate their complete environmental footprint, down to the specific batch level.
These projects will encompass all emission scopes (Scopes 1, 2, 3), providing food producers with invaluable insights to enhance their decision-making processes towards more sustainable production methods.
The inaugural joint venture will commence in Sweden, partnering with Gunnarshögs Gård, a prominent rapeseed oil producer.
By combining Bühler’s Environmental Impact Services, which offer a unique blend of quantification expertise, hardware, software, and process knowledge, with Improvin’s capabilities in measuring the sustainability performance of raw materials, food producers will have a comprehensive approach to track, disclose, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at scale.
The collaboration aims to equip food producers with technology capable of quantifying and disclosing the full CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) footprint of their operations and products on a batch-by-batch basis.
The initial project with Gunnarshögs Gård will integrate production data (Scopes 1 and 2) with raw material data (Scope 3 upstream), providing complete transparency across the value chain.
Niklas Wallsargård, CEO of Improvin’, highlights the significance of these joint endeavors in supporting customers’ transition towards more sustainable and transparent food production practices.
Ian Roberts, CTO at Bühler, recognizes Improvin’ as a leader in measuring the footprint of raw materials using primary data, emphasizing the holistic approach these projects offer in tracking emissions throughout the food production journey.
Erik Nilsson, CEO of Gunnarshögs Gård, expresses excitement about embarking on this project with Bühler and Improvin’, anticipating a deeper understanding of their environmental impact and actionable strategies to reduce it.
This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the collective effort to drive sustainability within the food industry, fostering innovation and accountability from field to fork.
Meanwhile, Improvin’ has recently partnered with Viking Malt in another sustainability drive, aiming to reduce supply chain emissions in barley production.
Through an AI-based platform, Viking Malt can measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their malting barley, engaging over 1200 farmers across Europe in climate-smart and sustainable farming practices.
Annika Wilhelmson, VP of Sustainability, Innovation & Marketing at Viking Malt Group, emphasizes the importance of empowering farmers to actively engage in sustainability efforts, marking a significant step towards supply chain sustainability in the malting industry.
