ASIA – Global rigid packaging supplier Crown Holdings has announced the achievement of its Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certifications within the Asia-Pacific region.
This expansion comes as part of the company’s commitments highlighted in its ‘Twentyby30’ sustainability program that aims to help in advancing responsible supply chains.
According to Crown, the ASI Performance Standard addressed environmental, social and governance principles for the aluminum value chain, confirming the recipient’s production practices are responsible.
Crown Asia-Pacific president Carlos Baila said: “Achieving this ASI certification is another proof point of our dedication to maintaining reputable supply chain relationships and meeting the evolving needs of brands in the Asia-Pacific market.
“We are committed to operating ethically and remaining accountable to our own standards, as well as those of our partners, as we continue to serve customers around the world.”
Crown said that it has already achieved the ASI Performance Standard certification for its existing operations in Brazil and Mexico.
It has now received that same certification for its Nong Khae and Crown TCP beverage packaging plants in Thailand.
Beyond meeting the required criteria as part of an independent, third-party audit, Crown says the recent certifications in Thailand can be linked to advancing employee training around biodiversity, safety and human rights.
The company adds that the third-party audit was conducted by LiberoAssurance, which has 20 offices situated around the globe, including a U.S. location in Wilmington, Delaware.
With these added two plants, the total number of Crown’s facilities to receive this credential has increased to 12.
Under its next steps, the company is now focusing to expand its responsible and ethical sourcing programs to other locations, including in the Asian, European, and Middle Eastern regions.
ASI CEO Fiona Solomon added: “By training employees around vital sustainability areas such as biodiversity, safety, and human rights, Crown is driving positive change within its operations.
“Through this latest certification in Thailand, Crown is extending its commitment to responsible practices, and we look forward to the company’s continued pursuit of ASI certification across its global operations.”
Meanwhile, in May, the company partnered with Ardagh Metal Packaging to fund a new grant opportunity as part of their continuing support of activities to spur the installation of aluminum can capture equipment in material recovery facilities (MRFs).
These grants will be presented by Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) in collaboration with The Recycling Partnership.
According to the two companies, grants will be awarded on a rolling basis, as The Recycling Partnership works with prospective grant recipients to understand their project timelines.
