DS Smith unveils recyclable cooler and fibre-based produce trays in sustainability push

Crafted from wax-free corrugated board, the GoChill Cooler is moisture-resistant and meets food-grade safety standards.

USA – Fibre-based packaging giant DS Smith has launched its fully recyclable and reusable GoChill Cooler in the US, marking a significant step forward in sustainable consumer packaging.

Designed as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic and Styrofoam coolers, the GoChill caters to the growing demand for greener options among outdoor enthusiasts and environmentally conscious consumers.

Crafted from wax-free corrugated board, the GoChill Cooler is moisture-resistant and meets food-grade safety standards.

It is designed to keep food and drinks cold with the same efficiency as conventional coolers but with a significantly lower environmental impact.

According to DS Smith, this innovation aligns with its broader commitment to eliminating waste and supporting circular economy principles.

A recent survey by the company revealed strong consumer support for sustainable alternatives—20% of respondents said they would avoid companies that use Styrofoam, while 77% preferred the GoChill Cooler over other disposable options.

“As warmer weather approaches and consumers spend more time outside, our high-performing cooler keeps perishable items cold for every outdoor activity,” said Evans Elliott, Innovation Product Specialist at DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper.

“GoChill Cooler provides a household item that is reusable and easily recyclable.”

The launch is part of DS Smith’s Now and Next sustainability strategy, which aims to close the loop on packaging by designing products that extend material lifecycles, reduce waste, and cut carbon emissions.

Partnership with Priméale advances sustainable produce packaging

In Europe, DS Smith is also making strides in reducing plastic use in fresh produce packaging. The company has partnered with Priméale, a subsidiary of French agri-food group Agrial, to develop fibre-based punnets for its Vegetable Kit range.

These recyclable trays are made from corrugated cardboard and feature a transparent cellulose hydrate lid for visibility, along with a moisture-resistant barrier to protect freshness.

“This breakthrough is part of DS Smith’s overall strategy to support its customers in their transition to sustainable and circular packaging solutions while maintaining essential functionalities like product protection and presentation,” said Benjamin Chedal, Director of Sales, Marketing, and Innovation at DS Smith.

Priméale’s Sales and Marketing Director, Christophe Charvieux, added, “This new tray, which stands out for its strength, resistance, and transparency, is the result of a joint effort between our teams and DS Smith. We are confident it meets consumer expectations in both functionality and recyclability.”

Both innovations underscore DS Smith’s leadership in sustainable packaging solutions for consumer and retail markets.
