NORWAY – Elopak, a leading global packaging company, has made significant strides in reducing its direct emissions, achieving a remarkable 33% decrease from its 2020 baseline.
This reduction encompasses Elopak’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, covering major sources like electricity usage, natural gas, and waste incineration.
These efforts are part of Elopak’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050, with an interim goal of reducing direct emissions by 42% by 2030, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Elopak’s achievements were highlighted in its inaugural combined annual and sustainability report, which tracks progress across the key pillars of people, planet, and profit.
Notably, emissions from Elopak’s filling machines decreased by 29% in 2023, and the average carbon footprint per Elopak carton dropped to 23.3gCO2e, down from 23.9gCO2e in 2022.
“This progress reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental, social, and ethical excellence as we work towards our goal of becoming a net zero company by 2050,” stated Elopak CEO Thomas Körmendi.
2023 marked a milestone of 15 years of structured sustainability reporting at Elopak. During the same year, the company earned an A+ score for ESG reporting from sustainability consultancy Position Green, placing it in the top 5% of companies best prepared for the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
In addition to its sustainability achievements, Elopak delivered strong financial performance in 2023 despite economic and geopolitical challenges.
Organic revenues increased by 9.4% to EUR 1.13 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 15.1%.
Furthermore, Elopak expanded its workforce significantly, welcoming 166 new employees in 2023 — the highest number ever hired in a single year by the company.
The company plans to further expand its workforce with the commencement of production at its new plant in Little Rock, Arkansas, scheduled for the first half of 2025.
“2023 was pivotal for advancing our sustainable growth. I extend my gratitude to our colleagues, customers, suppliers, and partners for their outstanding collaboration and the achievements we’ve realized throughout the year,” concluded Körmendi.
In February, Elopak equipped French dairy brand Yoplait with a range of pourable and spoonable yogurts in fiber-based Pure-Pak® Sense cartons with tethered caps.
For Yoplait, the Pure-Pak® Sense carton perfectly meets these expectations: the eco-designed container is made from 78% renewable materials and holds 750 grams of product – the equivalent of 6 yogurt cups, resulting in a 50% reduction in packaging.
