SAUDI ARABIA – FONTE has collaborated with SABIC and Napco National in Saudi Arabia to introduce bread bags made of ‘fully recycled’ post-consumer polyethylene, marking another stride towards achieving plastics’ circularity.

These bags, utilized to package FONTE’s Oat Arabic Bread, leverage two food-contact, certified circular polyethylene resin grades from SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio and are manufactured by Napco National, a vertically integrated producer of flexible film and packaging products in Saudi Arabia.

Notably, the bags integrate 100% mass-balanced certified content of recycled feedstock from mixed post-consumer plastic streams, converted into pyrolysis oil via advanced recycling, enabling SABIC to produce new polymers with identical purity and quality to conventional virgin plastics.

This groundbreaking initiative, the first circular packaging project in Saudi Arabia under SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE program, is a beacon of innovation. It underscores our commitment to expedite the adoption of a circular economy for plastics, inspiring further progress in sustainable solutions.

SABIC emphasizes that its circular materials adhere to mass balance accounting principles outlined by the ISCC PLUS program, ensuring transparent tracking of material flow throughout intricate supply chains.

Sanjay Mishra, head of the ETP and Performance Polymers business at SABIC, elucidates the transformative potential of the TRUCIRCLE program in transitioning the plastics industry from a linear to a circular model, underscoring the collaborative effort required to maximize post-consumer plastic recycling and sustainability.

Mohammed Binmahfoodh, CEO at Masdar Alhayat for Food Industries, reiterates FONTE’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and quality.

This commitment, aligned with Vision 2030 objectives, underscores the long-term dedication to addressing plastic challenges through value chain collaboration.

Chadi Radi, senior director at Napco National, echoes this commitment to sustainability, stressing the importance of developing packaging solutions that minimize environmental impact and promote circularity.

The collaboration with SABIC presents an opportunity for Napco National to contribute to the circularity of plastics in flexible packaging films, furthering sustainable initiatives in the region.

Alongside certified circular polymers, SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio encompasses various initiatives to promote recyclability, mechanical recycling, renewable polymers, and closed-loop initiatives to prevent valuable plastics from becoming waste.
