UAE – Tadweer Group has announced the closed bidding for the development of Abu Dhabi’s first greenfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a significant milestone in the region’s waste management and recycling efforts.

Located in the expansive Al Mafraq industrial area, this facility will cover more than 90,000 square meters, making it one of the largest MRFs in the region.

This facility’s primary objective is to process municipal waste and extract recyclables, including metals, plastics, and various other materials.

This initiative aims to substantially reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, enhance recycling efforts, and prepare feedstock for the Abu Dhabi Waste to Energy facility.

This strategic move highlights Tadweer Group’s commitment to increasing recycling rates, fostering a circular economy, and achieving its ambitious goal of diverting 80 percent of Abu Dhabi’s waste from landfills by 2030.

The MRF will be a key component of Tadweer Group’s circular cluster, a network of facilities designed to support the circular economy while reducing landfill dependency.

Beyond waste recovery, the facility plans to supply feedstock for other waste conversion projects, such as producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Ali Al Dhaheri, the Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group, emphasized the project’s importance in advancing the organization’s strategic vision.

He highlighted the crucial role of technology in extending the lifespan of recyclable materials and paving the way for a sustainable future. The facility will also support waste conversion initiatives, aligning with the UAE’s net-zero agenda.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the MRF is expected to drive economic growth by attracting local and foreign private sector investments, generating employment opportunities, and providing a platform for the training and development of UAE nationals. This will help foster a skilled workforce proficient in waste management and recycling practices.

The facility’s development will proceed through a closed tender process to ensure transparency and efficiency in service procurement.

Following the awarding of the contract, the engineering, procurement, and construction phases are set to begin by the end of 2024, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2026.

The establishment of this groundbreaking facility represents a paradigm shift in waste management practices, ushering in a new era of sustainability and environmental stewardship in Abu Dhabi.

With its comprehensive approach to recycling, waste diversion, and resource recovery, the MRF is poised to become a beacon of innovation and a catalyst for change in the region’s environmental landscape.
