KENYA – The Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO) is pleased to announce the addition of Waithera Mwai, head of communication at East African Breweries PLC (EABL), to its board.
With over 14 years of experience in communications and sustainability, Waithera brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to impactful initiatives and organizational excellence, aligning seamlessly with KEPRO’s mission.
Waithera’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for KEPRO, which is intensifying its public sensitization efforts to promote proper waste handling and management across Kenya.
KEPRO has been active in Western and Northern Kenya, conducting cleanup exercises and hosting forums to educate locals on the value of effective waste management.
“The Uasin Gishu County Government is actively developing strategies to ensure the implementation of waste management practices across different levels, starting with the Ward Climate Change Committees and Climate Project Implementation Committees,” said Mr. Barnoh Kipchumba, County Director of Environment and Climate Change.
“That is why we value forums like this, as they provide opportunities to advocate for waste management initiatives at the local level.”
In addition, KEPRO interacted with local waste management operators, whose insights underscore the significance of collaboration, innovation, and community engagement in sustainable waste management practices.
Operators stressed the importance of efficient waste segregation and proper disposal methods to reduce environmental impact and enhance public health.
They have strongly committed to adopting sustainable practices and working with stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
From pioneering recycling initiatives to community education programs, these conversations highlight the dedication of waste management operators to creating a cleaner and greener future for Eldoret and beyond.
“North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) is collaborating with its county members on four key thematic areas related to climate action: climate mitigation, climate adaptation, climate advancement, and climate technology,” added David Busienei, NOREB Representative.
“We are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure progress in these crucial areas. Together, we can significantly impact climate resilience and sustainability.”
Recently, to enhance waste collection and demonstrate the practical benefits of waste segregation at the source, KEPRO launched a Waste Collection Point at the Sacred Heart institution in Baba Dogo.
The church youth group and Youthprinua, a Community-Based Organization, will manage the waste collection cage, with Youthprinua serving as the official waste collectors.
This initiative, made possible through the collaboration of Sacred Heart Primary School, Youthprinua, and support from DI East Africa, underscores the importance of collective responsibility in waste management within the community.
