USA – Genpak, a prominent food service packaging manufacturer, has introduced its moulded fibre packaging line, deliberately formulated without the inclusion of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
This updated product range comprises hinged containers, trays, and tableware, strategically crafted to meet the evolving requirements of food restaurant operators.
Known as the Harvest Fiber line, these containers strike a balance between environmental sustainability and the essential performance and durability demanded by the foodservice industry.
Constructed from renewable fibre, these containers are microwave-safe and suitable for both hot and cold food items, ensuring versatility for restaurant applications.
Featuring snap-it-styled closures and convenient stacking rims, the Harvest Fiber products have been certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) for commercial compostability and have earned the US Department of Agriculture BioPreferred designation.
In addition to Harvest Fiber, Genpak offers paper cones, portions, and drink cups under its Harvest Paper portfolio. Products within this line are manufactured using raw materials sourced from forests managed with sustainable forestry practices and are industrial compostable.
In a strategic partnership with Danimer in 2020, Genpak collaborated to develop a new line of biodegradable food containers called GenZero.
Utilizing Danimer’s plant-based biopolymer Nodax polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), Genpak is set to manufacture this innovative line of food packaging products, emphasizing a commitment to sustainable packaging options.
Stephen Croskrey, CEO of Danimer Scientific, emphasized the importance of expanding the conversation around biodegradable materials, particularly in the food and beverage industries, where plastic is extensively utilized.
He highlighted the effectiveness of PHA in biodegrading across various environments, from waste treatment facilities to landfills and oceans.
Genpak’s foodservice items cater to diverse applications, including to-go hinged food containers, plates, bowls, platters, serving trays, and two-piece food containers.
The introduction of GenZero biodegradable products aligns with the company’s overarching focus on sustainable packaging alternatives.
Ranked sixth in the 2019 Plastics News’ ranking of North American thermoformers with estimated sales of US$500 million, Genpak operates 20 facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
Danimer Scientific, with 125 patents in nearly 20 countries, specializes in various manufacturing processes and biopolymer formulations, spanning applications such as additives, aqueous coatings, fibers, filaments, films, hot-melt adhesives, and injection-molded items.
