USA – SGD Pharma, a global frontrunner in glass pharmaceutical packaging, has set an ambitious goal to emerge as the premier global provider of primary pharmaceutical glass packaging.
CEO Olivier Rousseau envisions substantial growth for SGD Pharma in 2024, particularly in the domains of innovation, industry, and sustainability.
Rousseau emphasizes this vision by elucidating the notable investment milestones achieved in 2023, illustrating SGD Pharma’s strategic groundwork for the envisaged expansion.
He notes, “The onset of 2023 marked a new alliance with the announcement of our joint venture with Corning, supported by investments from the Telangana state in India.
“This collaboration amalgamated Corning’s cutting-edge coating technology with SGD Pharma’s proficiency in glass conversion to manufacture Velocity Vials, leveraging Type I borosilicate glass tubing.”
The commencement of the construction of a new tubing plant was officially inaugurated with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Vemula plant in India in June 2023.
Upon completion, this facility is poised to augment pharmaceutical packaging manufacturing in India, fostering broader accessibility to Corning Velocity Vial technology within the region.
Additional investments encompass the refurbishment of one of the two furnaces at SGD Pharma’s Saint Quentin Lamotte (SQLM) plant in France.
This reconstruction is projected to contribute to a two-thirds reduction in the company’s total carbon emissions by 2040 and achieve an almost 20% reduction in SQLM CO2 emissions.
A pivotal Memorandum of Understanding was also inked with the Zhanjiang Mayor in China, enabling SGD Pharma to undertake the reconstruction of the plant furnace at Zhanjiang. Simultaneously, a new siliconization operation line at the SQLM plant will enhance flexibility and capacity.
SGD Pharma is committed to decarbonization, with targeted emissions reductions of -65% by 2040. The company’s dedication to sustainability is underscored by its attainment of a gold EcoVadis sustainability rating, placing it in the top 5% of glass product manufacturers.
This achievement is attributed to high scores in EcoVadis’ four key areas, encompassing the environment and sustainable procurement.
Furthermore, SGD Pharma has recently joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company’s plants in France, Germany, India, and China are aligned with ambitious targets to decrease CO2 scope 1 and 2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and 65% by 2040, relative to a 2020 baseline.
