AUSTRIA – Greiner Packaging and Constantia Flexibles have joined forces to introduce a fully home-compostable coffee capsule solution.
In this collaboration, Greiner Packaging produces the capsule body, while Constantia Flexibles provides the EcoPressoLid, a compostable lid.
The capsule body is designed to maintain the coffee’s freshness and is compatible with standard coffee capsule machines. This sustainable solution promotes a circular economy by reducing environmental impact.
“We are committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging solutions,” said Taner Ertan, Greiner Packaging Global Business Development Manager.
“Our collaboration with Constantia Flexibles on the home-compostable coffee capsule embodies our shared vision for a greener future. This innovative product meets the high expectations of eco-conscious consumers and sets a new standard in the industry.
“We are proud to contribute to a solution that balances convenience and environmental responsibility.”
The EcoPressoLid from Constantia Flexibles boasts a high oxygen barrier and superior sealing properties, ensuring the compostable coffee capsules maintain their brewing capabilities.
The paper-based lid is compatible with prevalent capsule filling and sealing machines and can seal both the capsules’ top and bottom. The capsule body and lid have received the ‘OK Compost Home’ certification from TÜV Austria.
Peter Wallach, Constantia Flexibles Processed Meat & Beverages SVP Head, stated, “The EcoPressoLid capsule liner is a significant step towards more sustainable coffee consumption.
“We are especially proud of our partnership with Greiner Packaging, as it allows us to offer our customers a complete, TÜV Austria-certified solution.”
This compostable coffee capsule solution addresses consumer preferences and supports circular economy principles.
Last month, Constantia Flexibles introduced EcoTwistPaper, a sustainable confectionery packaging solution. EcoTwistPaper is a twist-wrap made entirely from paper, aligning with the global shift towards sustainable products.
The Confederation of European Paper Industries has tested EcoTwistPaper for reliability, and its printed material achieved a high score of 90 out of 100.
The new packaging solution avoids non-recyclable components like wax or polymeric coatings, incompatible with paper recycling.
According to Constantia Flexibles, the packaging offers excellent product protection and wrapping properties. Due to its lack of plastic coatings, it is unaffected by the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
