Mondi, Cemex debut SolmixBag Innovation in the Balearic Islands

SPAIN – UK-based sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi is rolling out its water-soluble cement bag, SolmixBag, in the Balearic Islands, Spain.

The company has partnered with global building materials company CEMEX to introduce SolmixBag to the construction industry across Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca.

Mondi and Cemex, which share a decade-long partnership, first collaborated on SolmixBag in 2021.

Cemex selected SolmixBag in response to the legal landfilling and waste incineration standards of the Spanish islands, seeking a sustainable cement bag that meets these requirements.

Both companies identified SolmixBag, adhering to extended producer responsibility (EPR) principles, as the optimal solution to drive sustainability and achieve zero-waste targets.

Cemex Balearic Islands commercial manager Nadal Mateu Piña said, “Mondi has provided the perfect product for our needs: we are now packaging our most sustainable cement in our product portfolio, CEM IV/B -(P) 32,5 SR- ECO+SR, in Mondi’s SolmixBag.

“Strict legal requirements on the Balearic Islands regarding landfilling and incineration of waste and EPR have initiated this move. We aim to use this as a best practice example to roll out in different regions and countries proactively.

“The launch not only benefits the local industry but also aligns with our sustainability roadmap ‘Future in Action.’”

Made using 100% kraft paper, SolmixBag is a one-ply water-soluble paper bag that can carry and transport dry cement, screed, and coarse premixes.

The design supports disintegration during the mixing process while minimizing dust and waste on the building site. Mondi highlighted that SolmixBag is also resistant to punctures.

When placed in the cement mixer, the bag’s fiber packaging integrates with the cement, leaving zero waste. The bag can be used on available filling machines and offers the same durability, strength, and shelf life as a conventional paper bag.

Mondi launched SolmixBag in June last year in collaboration with building materials supplier Baumit.

The one-ply paper bag was designed to store and transport construction materials, including dry-mix mortar materials and cement.

Mondi and Baumit worked closely throughout the development of this packaging solution. Baumit, a long-standing Mondi customer, helped bring SolmixBag to the construction market for dry-mix concrete.
