SWEDEN – Mondi, the multinational packaging and paper group, has collaborated with Swedish dairy producer Skånemejerier to develop a mono-material, polypropylene-based packaging solution for Skånemejerier’s cheese products.
Under this partnership, Mondi manufactures and prints mono-material base web and lidding films subsequently transformed into packaging for Skånemejerier’s 1kg and 2kg cheese blocks. The new recyclable packaging will be available in major Swedish supermarket ICA.
Mondi’s mono-material solution provides high resistance against oxygen and water vapors, making it suitable for storage on supermarket shelves.
Additionally, it offers excellent puncture resistance and printability for effective brand promotion.
Skånemejerier’s Packaging Manager, Ingemar Jönsson, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration, stating, “The great working relationship we had meant that we were able to adapt materials and machinery efficiently, resulting in a successful, fit-for-purpose solution.”
The launch of this sustainable packaging aligns with the opening of Site Zero, Mondi’s advanced sorting facility for used plastic packaging in Sweden, expected to open this month.
This facility is touted as the world’s largest sorting facility for used plastic packaging, and processing waste from both Sweden and Finland.
In a previous sustainable packaging initiative, Mondi partnered with Veetee in September to introduce new paper-based dry rice packaging for the UK market.
Utilizing Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper, this eco-friendly alternative to plastic packs aligns with consumer demands for more sustainable packaging solutions.
Mondi’s customer-centric approach involves assessing product, customer, and consumer requirements to provide suitable solutions, employing paper whenever feasible and plastic when it serves a practical purpose.
More recently, Mondi announced that its entire range of kraft papers for packaging has been certified as home or industrially compostable.
The certification underpins Mondi’s MAP2030 (Mondi Action Plan 2030) sustainability commitment to ensure that 100% of its packaging and paper products are reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.
This commitment aims to provide a sustainable end-of-life solution for all paper and packaging products.
While Mondi remains focused on recyclability to ensure that fibers are kept in circulation, composting can be a viable end-of-life option for certain applications, particularly those that are disposed of in the biowaste stream.
Mondi’s kraft papers are made from renewable and certified sources, which can help customers achieve their own sustainability goals.
