CZECH REPUBLIC – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has launched a new extrusion line at its Mondi Coating Štětí facility.
This development marks a significant step in supporting customers’ transitions to eco-friendly packaging solutions.
The new extrusion line is part of a broader investment, including a state-of-the-art production building equipped with advanced coating and slitting machinery.
This expansion enhances Mondi’s capacity to produce FunctionalBarrier Papers and other high-quality coated papers, offering customizable barrier properties for a variety of applications.
These include food—and non-food-contact packaging and industrial uses such as case linings for solid board and barrier liners for corrugated materials.
A key component of Mondi’s re/cycle portfolio, the FunctionalBarrier Papers are designed to be recyclable in existing paper waste streams across Europe, further supporting a circular economy.
Marko Schuster, Chief Operating Officer of Functional Paper & Films at Mondi, highlighted the significance of the investment, “The start-up of our new extrusion line at Štětí reflects Mondi’s commitment to helping customers on their sustainability journey.
“It contributes to our MAP2030 commitments by designing innovative packaging and paper solutions that keep materials in circulation and reduce waste. We look forward to collaborating closely with our customers to drive a more circular economy.”
Mondi unveils innovation hub in Germany
Recently, Mondi opened a brand-new innovation hub in Germany. The hub houses a research and development centre, an analytical laboratory, pilot lines, and a customer experience centre under one roof.
FlexStudios is a brand new 2300 m2 building in Steinfeld, Germany, with three floors of collaborative space.
The experiential studios have been built so Mondi customers can actively participate in innovation and use its expertise and state-of-the-art technology.
Mondi hopes to reduce the time to market for new packaging and paper solutions by combining pilot lines, testing capabilities, and co-creation space under one roof.
The top floor of the building houses FlexStudios Inspire, an area for collaboration and research. It includes an interactive creative zone and discovery showcase profiling Mondi’s portfolio.
The hub’s ground floor is home to FlexStudios Innovate, a pilot facility for developing and demonstrating product performance. Meanwhile, the FlexStudios Advance unit on the first floor is a laboratory and testing facility.
Thomas Ott, CEO of Flexible Packaging at Mondi, says, “This ground-breaking hub brings to life how we work closely with customers to understand material complexities and how packaging impacts the entire product lifecycle.
“With FlexStudios, we offer our customers a space to explore all our sustainable packaging and paper solutions. We are excited to collaborate with our customers on their transition to sustainable solutions. FlexStudios is more than just a building – it is an experiential space that will help shape the future of flexible packaging.”
