AUSTRIA – Packaging and paper firm Mondi has invested €65 million (US$66.18 million) in its three production plants in Europe to meet customer demand for sustainable pet food packaging solutions.
The funds will be used to boost the production capacity of three Consumer Flexibles packaging plants, including Mondi Korneuburg in Austria and Mondi Halle and Mondi Steinfeld in Germany
The latest move is part of Mondi’s previously announced €1 billion (US$1.02 billion) expansionary capital investment program to solidify its position in pet food packaging while accelerating the development of sustainable packaging.
Work at Korneuburg (Austria) plant has already begun and includes an increased production area and investments in new advanced technology and equipment.
According to the firm, the changes will increase the capacity and bolster the site’s position as the industry leader in pre-made retort stand-up pouches for wet pet food.
At the Mondi Halle and Mondi Steinfeld plant in Germany, the packaging firm will invest in new equipment to boost the capacity of manufacturing sustainable pre-made bag solutions for pet food, household and personal care products.
The move will enable future development and help clients as they shift from multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging to more sustainable options like single-material recyclable stand-up pouches and pre-made paper bags.
Mondi Consumer Flexibles COO Dirk Gabriel said: “We take pride in being an innovative, agile partner for our customers. With this investment, we continue to take the lead in packaging solutions that are sustainable by design, especially in the pet food industry.
“This investment also supports our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework which is focused on circular driven solutions, created by empowered people, taking action on climate.
With these projects, the firm is increasing operational efficiency and reducing its energy consumption while also connecting the production network, notes Gabriel.
Mondi’s industrial packaging made of heavy-duty corrugated board
Meanwhile, the firm announced that its industrial packaging is made of heavy-duty corrugated board.
The firm says that its heavy-duty corrugated board is a high-performance reliable alternative to wood and steel and is capable of reducing CO2 footprint and overall sustainability, which is an area many companies struggle with.
They are bonded based on wet-strength parameters and are made using high-quality papers for durability across different climatic regions.
