Mondi unveils Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible paper for high-performance packaging

UK – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, has expanded its kraft paper portfolio with the launch of Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible, a new grade engineered to deliver strength, puncture resistance, extensibility, and a smooth, coatable surface.

Developed over three years by Mondi’s kraft paper specialists, the new product is positioned between traditional sack kraft paper and machine-finished kraft grades, offering converters and brand owners a versatile base paper for coated and heat-sealable packaging.

Its calendered finish ensures reliable coating adhesion and superior printability, giving it a distinct edge over rougher natural brown substrates.

Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible has been engineered to balance mechanical strength and processing efficiency, making it particularly suited for form-fill-and-seal (FFS) packaging.

This includes applications for sharp-edged or heavy goods such as dry food, building materials, spare parts, and toys, sectors where both durability and shelf appeal are critical.

The paper runs on existing converting and filling lines, enabling packaging producers to integrate it into operations without costly process adjustments.

With high puncture resistance and coating compatibility, the substrate supports barrier solutions and functional coatings for enhanced product protection.

As with Mondi’s broader kraft paper range, the new grade is made from responsibly sourced fresh fibres, with PEFC or FSC® certification available.

It is recyclable in EU paper streams, having passed CEPI’s 4Evergreen recyclability evaluation protocol, giving converters a reliable sustainable option at a time when demand for recyclable materials is accelerating.

“It is ideally suited as a base for our barrier papers, where uniformity and surface stability are essential to achieving consistent coating performance.”

Expanding Mondi’s innovation pipeline

The launch follows Mondi’s introduction of FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate, a recyclable substrate designed to replace multi-layer plastics and aluminium foils in applications requiring robust protection.

That product achieves oxygen and water vapor transmission rates below 0.5 cm³/m²/day and 0.5 g/m²/day, positioning it as a credible alternative to traditional non-recyclable laminates.

Together, these innovations underscore Mondi’s strategy to develop next-generation fibre-based packaging solutions, addressing the twin demands of high performance and circularity.
