UK – Mondi, a global packaging leader, recently introduced IntegoBag, a sustainable alternative to traditional paper bags with free film layers, specifically for the construction industry.
Designed to improve recyclability, the IntegoBag offers a simplified recycling process while a specialized barrier coating enhances protection and durability for building materials.
This innovation reflects Mondi’s commitment to sustainable solutions by eliminating the need for plastic layers typically used for moisture resistance.
IntegoBag is part of Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper line, featuring a high-performance moisture barrier that significantly reduces polyethylene content by up to 50% compared to standard alternatives.
This solution is created in-house, leveraging Mondi’s integrated value chain from responsibly sourced kraft paper production to coating and bag converting.
This closed-loop process aligns with Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability goals to reduce waste through recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging solutions.
The bag’s durable design allows it to perform on par with traditional bags during processing and can be used on existing filling machinery, making it a versatile choice for construction customers.
It comes in various packaging sizes, suitable for filling up to 25 kg, and provides puncture resistance, good printability, and both bleached and unbleached options.
Mondi has also ensured IntegoBag’s recyclability through comprehensive testing, scoring an impressive 19 out of 20 points according to Interseroh+ certification standards.
Mauro Vitali, Mondi’s Sales Manager for Paper Bags in Italy, highlighted the collaboration with industry leaders like Saint-Gobain, which helped refine IntegoBag to meet specific industry demands.
“By bringing together our expertise, we’ve developed a recyclable alternative and can avoid waste, helping our customers stay ahead of the regulatory curve,” Vitali explained.
The innovation has already garnered attention, receiving a nomination for the Austrian Green Star Packaging Award and a shortlist spot for The Sustainability Awards.
Additionally, Mondi is exploring further innovations in sustainable packaging, such as the water-soluble SolmixBag, introduced in partnership with CEMEX to meet Balearic Islands’ waste reduction regulations.
Both companies identified SolmixBag, adhering to extended producer responsibility (EPR) principles, as the optimal solution for driving sustainability and achieving zero-waste targets.
Made using 100% kraft paper, SolmixBag is a one-ply water-soluble paper bag that can carry and transport dry cement, screed, and coarse premixes.
The design supports disintegration during the mixing process while minimizing dust and waste on the building site. Mondi highlighted that SolmixBag is also resistant to punctures.
