Mondi’s new laser-marked flexible packaging eliminates printing plates for E-commerce, bag-in-box applications

The design targets e-commerce and bag-in-box applications, working across flexible packaging formats to advance circularity and strengthen supply chains.

AUSTRIA – Mondi has introduced a laser-marked flexible packaging format that removes the need for standard decorative printing and printing plates, enabling faster artwork changes and supporting circularity through simplified material structures for e-commerce and bag-in-box applications.

The innovative packaging, announced on 5 August 2026, pairs a corrugated outer carton with recyclable flexible packaging marked directly by laser during converting.

This technology eliminates the need for printing plates, making it easier to customise packs, update artwork quickly and adjust designs in response to shifts in market demand and consumer preferences.

Laser Marking Technology and Artwork Flexibility

Artwork is added directly to the flexible packaging during converting through laser marking technology, removing the need for standard decorative printing and printing plates.

The format can be used across different flexible packaging types, including reels, pre-made pouches such as the re/cycle StripPouch, and larger pre-made bags.

According to the company, this can aid recycling-focused design by simplifying material structures and cutting decorative features.

Bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content can be included, depending on the application.

The company noted the concept may also help reduce lead times and give customers more flexibility when launching new products or changing designs.

Applications and Commercialisation Plans

The design is aimed at e-commerce and bag-in-box uses and can be applied to several flexible packaging formats to support circularity and form supply chains.

Mondi is working with customers and partners to examine wider commercial use of the format in pet food, home and personal care products, and e-commerce packaging.

Jens Koesters, R&D and Innovation Technical Service Manager at Mondi Consumer Flexibles, stated that customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands, with the concept supporting circularity through the use of bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility.

The format also gives customers the option to consider bag-in-box solutions from a single supplier, streamlining supply chains and reducing complexity in packaging sourcing. In the first half of 2026, Mondi reported a net loss of €255 million (US$294 million) attributable to shareholders, compared with a profit of €63 million in the prior year.
