USA – Origin Materials has unveiled its groundbreaking manufacturing achievement with the launch of its all-PET caps and closures.

This unveiling is led by the world’s lightest CSD (carbonated soft drink) cap compatible with the PCO 1881 neck finish, a pioneering product manufactured entirely from 100% PET, whether virgin or recycled (rPET).

John Bissell, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Origin emphasized the significance of this innovation within the packaging industry.

He highlighted the PCO 1881 neck finish’s prominence in carbonated soft drinks and widespread adoption across various beverage categories.

Bissell underscored how Origin’s 100% PET cap stands to revolutionize recycling circularity and product performance within this expansive market.

In elucidating the technical feat, Bissell remarked on Origin’s prowess in PET closure design and manufacturing, which was previously deemed unattainable.

He noted the advantages brought forth by PET and rPET, ranging from enhanced recycling capabilities to improved product shelf life and reduced manufacturing waste.

Central to Origin’s innovation is its 1881 closure, boasting a lightweight design without compromising performance.

Leveraging PET’s superior mechanical properties compared to conventional materials like HDPE and PP, Origin achieves optimal performance with minimal plastic usage.

Moreover, Origin’s design incorporates tamper-evident features, enhancing the user experience through tactile feedback and audible cues upon opening.

Bissell emphasized the mono-material nature of Origin’s solutions, wherein PET is utilized from cap to bottom, ensuring recyclability and sustainability across diverse product categories.

Excited to showcase their PET caps at the NPE2024 conference in Orlando, Florida, Bissell anticipates the opportunity to collaborate with industry partners and further champion sustainable packaging solutions.

Origin aims to commence commercial-scale production of PET caps and closures in Q4 2024, propelled by its high-throughput production system.

This transformative leap in packaging promises to address sustainability challenges while catering to a market valued at over US$65 billion, aligning with Origin’s core mission of fostering a transition to sustainable materials in packaging.

Origin, PackSys Global partner on PET cap and closure system

Meanwhile, Origin Materials has partnered with PackSys Global, a leading packaging machine producer, to pioneer the development of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) cap and closure manufacturing system.

This collaboration capitalizes on Origin’s innovative high-throughput production system, poised to revolutionize the production of PET caps and closures at a commercial scale.

The system’s capabilities extend beyond mere manufacturing. It is designed to enhance recyclability, promote lightweight packaging, and extend product shelf life in alignment with circular economy principles.

Moreover, it facilitates the creation of mono-material containers, further advancing sustainability in packaging solutions.

John Bissell, Co-CEO and Co-founder of Origin expressed the significance of their production system, emphasizing its unique capacity to address industry needs on a global scale.

He highlighted the system’s potential to unlock the recycling, sustainability, and performance benefits of Origin’s PET cap and closure solution.

Bissell envisions this as the first step towards establishing similar production lines for containers across diverse sectors, not only for beverage packaging.

Acknowledging the expertise of PackSys Global in packaging machinery, Bissell underscored the importance of collaborating with a reputable industry leader.

By integrating high-quality subsystems from PackSys Global, Origin is poised to establish a robust production line capable of meeting the demands of various industries, including cosmetics, beverage, pharmaceuticals, and packaging.

This partnership exemplifies Origin’s commitment to driving the transition towards sustainable materials in packaging, marking a significant stride towards a more environmentally conscious future.
