Polytag, MCC’s invisible UV tags turn IML packaging into recyclable data sources

The technology supports the circular economy by enabling more accurate sorting of packaging waste, resulting in higher-quality recycled material streams that can be reintegrated into new packaging production.

UK – Polytag has partnered with Multi-Color Corporation to integrate its invisible UV tag technology directly into in-mould labelled packaging for the first time, enabling brands to capture detailed consumer recycling data and support advanced sorting capabilities for applications like frozen foods.

The UK-based data capture platform’s UV tag acts as an invisible digital fingerprint, readable by detection units at Material Recovery Facilities. 

Unlike visual identification, these tags carry detailed packaging data including material composition, recycled content, manufacturing details, and material origin, enabling identification and sorting based on attributes critical to recycling outcomes. 

From Milk Bottles to IML: Expanding Traceability to Durable Formats

Previously deployed on milk bottles for Waitrose and Ocado, the collaboration with MCC Global IML extends traceability to products where traditional labels may not be suitable or durable enough. 

The partners have already demonstrated the technology on Happy Cow’s faux brand tub packaging in a joint initiative with GS1 and Pellenc ST, showcasing improved material recovery and traceability for IML packaging. 

Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag, stated that the partnership allows the company to extend the reach of its technology and scale into new packaging formats, helping brands access valuable recycling data while preparing for the future of connected packaging.

Recyclability and EPR Data: How UV Tags Drive Circularity and Offset Compliance Fees

The data is fed back to brands through the Polytag platform, helping offset Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees and informing packaging design to increase recyclability and create higher-quality recycled material streams. 

Nico Van de Walle, senior product and circularity manager at MCC Global IML, added that the packaging industry is entering a period of transformation as brands prepare for greater product transparency, and combining MCC’s expertise with Polytag’s technology helps bring connected packaging to more products and consumers. 

Jon Anderson, chief technology officer at Polytag, noted that for connected packaging to deliver real value, it needs to work across as many packaging formats as possible, and extending the technology into IML packaging allows brands to gain deeper insight into what happens to packaging after use.
