US – American Fortune 500 company and global supplier of paints, coatings, and specialty materials, PPG has introduced an improved internal spray coating for aluminum beverage cans that do not contain bisphenol-A (BPA).

PPG Innovel PRO is a next-generation, high-performance acrylic coating that builds on PPG Innovel’s nearly 10 years of experience as the most widely used BPA-free indoor beverage spray coating.

The company estimates that to date, PPG Innovel coatings have been used on more than 220 billion cans in more than 40 countries.

PPG’s Innovel PRO coating meets all global standards for consumer food contact safety, and its improved application properties provide operational benefits to canneries around the world.

“The growing and dynamic beverage can industry require solutions that meet global regulations to remove BPA from food contact coatings while maintaining maximum canning line speed and minimum spoilage,” said Amy Erickson, Senior Vice President of PPG.

Validated by the PPG SAFEASSURE™ protocol for the safe development of food contact coatings, PPG Innovel PRO coating reliably supports the ever-expanding range of fillers that beverage brands seek to package.

It has a lower migration profile than standard epoxies and epoxy-like coatings, and all PPG Innovel indoor spray coatings have received CRADLE-TO-CRADLE® Platinum material health certification from the Cradle-to-Cradle Product Innovation Institute.

Ericson added: “PPG offers customers a resilient supply chain with manufacturing sites across the globe.

“The new coating also comes with the support of industry-leading technical and regulatory support teams, which provide on-site expertise to keep customer operations running smoothly.

“PPG Innovel PRO coating is a big step forward for the industry, enabling major beverage brands to more efficiently offer safer and more sustainable metal-packaged drinks that today’s consumers can feel good about.”

Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, PPG serves customers in the construction, consumer products, industrial and transportation sectors and aftermarkets.

Through dedication and creativity, the firm solves its clients’ biggest challenges and works closely together to find the right way forward.

In addition, the company does business and innovates in more than 75 countries, with net sales of US$16.8 billion in 2021.
