Qatar retailer, bank partner to launch eco-friendly campaign

The campaign has sparked widespread community support, with customers embracing the reusable bags

QATAR – Al Meera Consumer Goods Company, in collaboration with Al Rayan Bank and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, launched the “I am not made of plastic” initiative on July 3, 2025, coinciding with International Plastic Bag Free Day.

The nationwide campaign intends to promote sustainable shopping habits by introducing limited-edition reusable shopping bags across all Al Meera branches in Qatar, encouraging customers to ditch single-use plastics.

The reusable bags, designed as both a practical alternative and a symbol of environmental responsibility, have been rolled out to inspire collective action against plastic waste.

According to a spokesperson from Al Meera, the initiative reflects a commitment to fostering a greener future.

“Recognizing that the fight against plastic pollution demands a collective effort, we are empowering our customers to contribute to sustainability through eco-friendly alternatives like these bags and our Reverse Vending Machines,” the spokesperson said.

To boost community engagement, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change hosted an awareness event at Al Meera’s Al Mansoura branch, educating the public on adopting eco-friendly habits.

The event featured a competition where customers could win QAR 5,000 (US$1.3K) in shopping vouchers, adding a fun incentive to the campaign’s serious message.

Eman Al Naemi, Assistant General Manager of Corporate Communications at Al Rayan Bank, emphasized the partnership’s significance.

“Our participation reflects our commitment to meaningful environmental initiatives. We hope this collaboration with Al Meera inspires simple yet effective steps toward a cleaner future,” he said.

Al Meera’s sustainability efforts extend beyond reusable bags.

Its network of Reverse Vending Machines, installed in select branches, allows customers to recycle plastic bottles and cans in exchange for Meera Rewards points, blending convenience with environmental action.

In a recent update, Al Meera expanded its green initiatives by partnering with local organizations to introduce electronic waste recycling stations in 2025, further reducing landfill waste.

The move complemented the “I am not made of plastic” campaign, reinforcing Al Meera’s role as a leader in sustainable retail.

By integrating such initiatives, Al Meera and Al Rayan Bank are setting a precedent for corporate responsibility, urging both individuals and institutions to prioritize the planet’s health.

The campaign has sparked widespread community support, with customers embracing the reusable bags as a step toward reducing Qatar’s plastic footprint.
