SPAIN – Saica Group, a leading company in packaging solutions, and Mondelez, a prominent fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer, have partnered to launch a new paper-based packaging product targeted for multipacks in the confectionery, biscuits, and chocolate markets.
The new packaging is designed to be recyclable in the paper waste stream, which is suitable for heat-sealable packing processes. It can be coated or uncoated, depending on the desired final appearance.
The development focused on optimizing conversion and Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) packing processes to ensure high printing quality, optimal functionality, and ease of use for machine-packing lines.
This approach guarantees that the contents reach consumers in perfect condition, meeting the required mechanical and sealing performance standards.
The product adheres to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) sustainability standards.
This initiative is part of Mondelez International’s ongoing efforts to pack ‘light and right’ in line with its global sustainable packaging goals.
By 2025, Mondelez aims to reduce virgin plastic in rigid plastic packaging by at least 25% and in all plastic packaging by 5%.
As of the end of 2022, Mondelez had already reduced packaging materials by 72,600 metric tonnes and aims to make 98% of its packaging recyclable by 2025.
Similarly, Saica Group is fully committed to transitioning to a circular economy. Saica has set ambitious targets for resource efficiency, material circularity, climate neutrality, and zero littering to achieve this.
Specifically, the flexible packaging business unit has committed to designing a 100% recyclable flexible packaging portfolio by 2025, introducing at least 5% by weight of post-consumer recycled content in its products by 2025, reducing the plastic content by 20% by 2025, and ensuring that 15% by weight of all packaging is made of paper structures by 2025.
“Packaging sustainability is a serious challenge that requires our full commitment and far-reaching collaborations with equally dedicated companies like Mondelez,” said Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager at Saica Flex.
“Our ambition to develop Saica’s flexible monomaterial structures, including paper, is key to achieving all these goals. By 2025, we hope 100% of our flexible packaging offer is recyclable, contributing to a truly circular economy.”
Mr. Dora also highlighted that by 2025, Saica aims to offer 15% by weight of its flexible packaging solutions made from paper structures.
