GERMANY – SN Maschinenbau has entered into a partnership with Südpack to develop an innovative concept for in-house production of stand-up pouches with spouts, specifically designed for packaging pasty and liquid products.

The development of this concept is expected to assist food producers and processors of both thick and thin fluid products, such as fruit purees and smoothies, as well as other liquids.

The food manufacturers can utilize this concept to produce spout pouches internally and subsequently fill and seal them using their existing filling machines.

These recyclable stand-up pouches will serve as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to pre-made spout pouches.

For this packaging concept, Südpack will provide its polypropylene (PP)-based Pure-Line film solution, while SN Maschinenbau will provide its SPM 50 horizontal pouch-making machine.

SPM 50 can manufacture up to 4,200 pouches per hour and achieve a production of more than 30,000 spout pouches in an eight-hour shift using only one film reel.

This results in an annual production volume of seven million spout pouches in a one-shift operation and up to 21 million in a three-shift operation.

“With our overall concept, we are offering our customers with an attractive alternative to high-cost pre-made pouches, the processing and filling of which often entails a great deal of logistical effort,” explained Lutz Neugebauer, Product Manager at SÜDPACK.

“Our solution makes it possible for the producers and fillers of pasty and liquid food products to manufacture spout pouches in-house that can then be filled and sealed as usual on their existing filling machines.

“Our concept is based on a user-friendly pouch-making machine combined with perfectly coordinated films and spouts, ensuring reliable processing.

The Pure-Line film is made of a recyclable mono-material. This use of PP components in the packaging is intended to provide easy handling of the product and maximize its reliability.

Maschinenbau Global Sales Director, Thomas Fuest, added, “The aforementioned factors mentioned above make investing in this pouch concept highly viable in economic terms.

“In addition to significantly improved ergonomics for spout and rail handling, as well as a high level of flexibility in terms of pouch and spout designs, the SPM 50 is an excellent investment that can enhance your value creation.”

The new concept will be launched during the international trade fair Prod&Pack, which is scheduled to be held between November 21 and 23 in Lyon, France.
