Telecel Ghana marks World Sustainability Day with hands-on upcycling workshop

GHANA – Telecel Ghana has reinforced its dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible business conduct through a practical upcycling and sustainability workshop held to commemorate World Sustainability Day 2025.

Organized by the Telecel Ghana Foundation under the company’s Environmental Responsibility pillar, the event equipped employees with hands-on skills in waste segregation, upcycling, and circular economy practices.

Participants also explored core sustainability principles, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, energy efficiency, and the management of plastic and electronic waste in business operations.

In collaboration with McKingtorch Africa, the workshop encouraged participants to turn waste into value. Employees transformed discarded plastic into a custom-built bench for the Telecel office and crafted tabletop potted plants using upcycled materials.

The activity demonstrated how small, everyday actions can collectively drive significant environmental change.

“Sustainability happens when individuals choose to act,” said Komla Buami, Director for External Affairs at Telecel Ghana.

“Every small, consistent step from our employees brings us closer to the future we envision, a cleaner, greener, more responsible world.”

World Sustainability Day, observed globally on the last Wednesday of October, underscores the collective responsibility to protect the planet for future generations.

Telecel Ghana’s participation aligns with its Purpose-Led Pillars, Environmental Responsibility and Sustainable Society, which shape its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy.

This initiative builds on Telecel Ghana’s growing portfolio of environmental programs. Earlier in April, the company marked Earth Day with a sustainability-focused webinar encouraging employees to reduce waste, conserve energy, and embrace eco-friendly lifestyles.

In June, Telecel employees planted 13,000 trees, 10,000 in Accra’s Chipa Forest Reserve and 3,000 in Kumasi’s South Formangso Reserve, in partnership with the Forestry Commission under the Green Ghana “Tree for Life” afforestation campaign.

Beyond these efforts, Telecel Ghana continues to invest in energy management interventions, including transitioning key facilities, such as data centres, to solar power.

Telecel joins a growing number of African corporations integrating sustainability into workplace culture.

For instance, MTN Nigeria recently introduced an e-waste recycling drive across its service centres, while Safaricom Kenya runs an internal “Zero Waste Challenge” encouraging employees to repurpose office waste into creative items.

Through consistent environmental engagement, Telecel Ghana is nurturing sustainability champions among its workforce, extending the company’s impact from the workplace to homes and communities, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
