Valmet to acquire Severn Group in US$480M deal, strengthening global and Indian flow control capabilities

Through this acquisition, Valmet is localizing the production of mission-critical flow control technology in India.

INDIA — Valmet has announced a major strategic move with the acquisition of Severn Group, a global industrial valve manufacturer, from UK-based private equity firm Bluewater.

The US$480 million agreement includes all three Severn divisions,Severn Glocon, ValvTechnologies, and LB Bentley, bringing more than six decades of specialised flow control expertise under Valmet’s expanding process performance solutions segment.

The deal is expected to close in Q2 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Valmet President and CEO Thomas Hinnerskov said the acquisition aligns directly with the company’s Lead the Way strategy.

“Severn’s strong capabilities and proven track record in severe service for demanding applications make it an excellent strategic fit for Valmet,” he stated.

“This acquisition strengthens our commitment to deliver lasting customer value across the equipment lifecycle.”

Severn Group CEO Perttu Louhiluoto said joining Valmet unlocks global growth potential. “With Valmet as our new owner, the scale and breadth of global opportunities increase significantly. Together, we can accelerate our expansion into new markets and deliver greater value to customers worldwide.”

India perspective: Strengthening local manufacturing and supply chain reliability

Severn Group’s projected 2025 net sales of EUR 215 million and a global workforce of 950 employees, including a major manufacturing facility in Chennai, position the acquisition as a transformative development for India’s industrial, paper, and packaging sectors.

By integrating Severn’s India operations into Valmet’s global network, the company is localizing the production of mission-critical flow control systems.

For Indian pulp and paper mills, this shift brings significant operational advantages. Historically, mills relied on imported high-specification valves, creating challenges in lead times, availability, and part replacements.

With manufacturing and service capabilities based in India, Valmet can now ensure faster delivery, reduced downtime, and more efficient mill upgrades.

From a technical standpoint, Severn’s high-integrity valve systems enhance process stability in pulp consistency control, critical for maintaining GSM, moisture uniformity, and surface quality in paper rolls.

As Indian packaging converters adopt faster, more automated printing and converting lines, consistent upstream material quality becomes essential. Integrated flow control improves equipment reliability and output uniformity across the value chain.

The impact extends beyond paper production to chemical, ink, and adhesive manufacturers. These plants, essential suppliers to India’s flexible packaging industry, require precise flow control for handling solvents, resins, and hazardous materials.

Improved access to Severn’s severe-service valves enhances safety margins and minimizes unplanned outages.

With sustainability and energy efficiency becoming capex priorities, upgraded flow control systems will help Indian mills and chemical plants reduce energy consumption, optimize steam and water use, and minimize waste.

The acquisition effectively bridges high-end Finnish engineering with India’s industrial growth, reinforcing a more resilient, technologically advanced, and environmentally aligned future for the country’s print and packaging ecosystem.
