Herma expands PP film portfolio with two transparent, wash-off label materials

GERMANY – Herma has strengthened its presence in the self-adhesive materials market with the launch of two new transparent polypropylene (PP) films designed to deliver clear-on-clear aesthetics, high performance, and certified wash-off properties.

The new additions are based on the company’s multi-layer 72Hpw adhesive technology and are available in net widths with short lead times, targeting converters seeking greater efficiency and versatility.

At the core of the development is Herma’s permanent multi-layer 72Hpw adhesive, engineered to provide both strong adhesion and easy wash-off capabilities, a combination typically difficult to achieve in pressure-sensitive labels.

“The 72Hpw adhesive we have developed has once again proven to be a perfect all-rounder for film applications,” said Hendrik Kehl, product manager at Herma.

“Its special formulation ensures both wash-off properties and transparency, even in humid environments such as beverage filling lines.”

The adhesive is paired with Herma PP transparent super tc film (type 886) and offered with two PET release liner options: 30 µm and 23 µm.

This range enables compatibility with high-speed dispensing systems and covers a wide spectrum of processing needs across label converters.

In terms of printability, both variants deliver high-quality results using all common printing technologies, making them suitable for cosmetics, household chemicals, personal care, and other applications that require durability, chemical resistance, and premium visual appeal.

Recycling compatibility strengthens market positioning

A key differentiator of the new PP films is their compatibility with rigid HDPE recycling streams.

The 72Hpw adhesive has been certified recyclable by the Cyclos-HTP Institute, meeting PET recycling requirements under an 80°C wash cycle and HDPE requirements at 40°C.

Additionally, RecyClass has classified the PP films combined with the adhesive as fully compatible with rigid HDPE recycling processes.

This capability positions Herma strongly within Europe’s accelerating shift toward design-for-recycling in packaging.

As brands adjust to evolving regulatory frameworks such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), demand is growing for label materials that do not compromise recyclability or create contamination risks.

The materials, produced in Herma’s highly automated Plant 2 facility dedicated to film production, benefit from precise coating technology that ensures consistent quality and streamlined processing during label converting.

Herma’s latest PP film innovations arrive as global brands push for clearer, more sustainable label solutions without sacrificing performance, especially in fast-moving sectors like beverages, beauty and home care, where transparent branding and recyclability are increasingly intertwined.
