Label Intelligence begins with the packaging’s operating context, the brand, category, competitive landscape, and target audience.

SOUTH AFRICA – Vollherbst has launched Label Intelligence in South Africa, a new business unit that combines consumer insights, strategic evaluation and production expertise to help wine and beverage brands make better packaging decisions, with the first pilot projects underway and a full rollout planned for Q4 2026.
The premium label specialist’s new offering, based at THE CUBE in Stellenbosch, brings together more than a century of packaging experience with new forms of consumer intelligence and objective validation.
The Check · Develop · Validate · Execute framework supports brands through packaging development, from market context and category analysis to validation and premium label production.
Since 2020, Vollherbst has invested more than €7 million (US$8.0 million) in production and finishing technologies, including digital and conventional printing, premium finishing and label engineering.
How Label Intelligence Combines Consumer Insight with Production Expertise
Label Intelligence starts with the context in which packaging has to perform: the brand, its category, competitive environment and intended audience.
Using market and category information together with new forms of consumer intelligence and packaging analysis, the service examines how existing or newly developed packaging is likely to perform, not simply whether a design is good or bad, but whether it supports the strategic and commercial objectives of the brand.
Matthias Vollherbst, fourth-generation owner, stated that new technologies give access to insights that were simply not available in this form a few years ago, adding that the opportunity is not to replace experience or creativity but to combine these new possibilities with a deep understanding of brands, packaging and production.
THE CUBE and Market Expansion
THE CUBE at Bosman’s Crossing in Stellenbosch serves as the South African home of Label Intelligence, designed as a working environment where brand owners, marketers and packaging specialists can collaborate on specific packaging questions.
Vollherbst has worked with South African wine, sparkling wine and spirits producers since 2004, with Label Intelligence set to open progressively to additional South African customers from Q4 2026.
The company’s flagship production site in Endingen, Germany, provides the industrial platform behind its premium label production, while THE CUBE offers a local environment for prototyping, real-time collaboration and market testing.
The first projects are currently being piloted with selected wine and beverage brands, with the new unit designed to complement established design processes while allowing brands to introduce additional strategic insight and consumer intelligence into their packaging development.
