SPAIN – Global packaging solutions provider Amcor Capsules, has collaborated with Aludium to produce a low-carbon aluminium product for use in screwcaps.

Amcor says that when compared to primary aluminium produced in China it represents an average carbon footprint reduction of more than 80%.

Also known as Aludium Eco Brand 4.0, the new technology is cradle-to-gate including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions with 4 tonnes of CO2 produced per tonne of semi-finished aluminium.

Yannick Magnon, Amcor Capsules general manager said: Our aluminum screw caps have been made using exclusively European-based aluminum, resulting in an average CO2 emission that is already lower than any other region.

“As a result, Amcor screw caps are well positioned against other screw caps on the market that use a blend of European and non-European aluminum.”

The new technology is said to produce less than four metric tons of CO2 equivalent per ton of aluminum from raw material extraction until delivery.

The saving is made possible due to the combined use of recycled content and carefully selecting low-carbon primary aluminum.

Bertrand Daru, sustainability director at Amcor Capsules added: “We are already leading the market with 96% of our products being recycle-ready.

“But we want to go further and reduce the levels of CO2 emitted during manufacturing. Our aluminum screw caps now offer a more sustainable alternative for wine and spirits brands and distributors.”

Maison Saint Aix partnership

Amcor Capsules has worked with Maison Saint Aix on tin closures, creating a solution for its six-liter large-format bottles.

The move has seen Amcor work with the winemaker following previous collaboration from 2015 when the companies first teamed up on development and when it began supplying the winery with Stelvin Lux screw caps for their 75cl bottles.

Located in the hillsides of the Coteaux d’Aix-en Provence appellation, Maison Saint Aix only produces one product, Aix rosé, which is available in a large range of bottle sizes, from the classic 75cl to the massive 15l format, making it a great choice for many different occasions, it said.

According to Maison, packaging the larger six-liter bottles for pouring at weddings or grand ceremonies “can be a real challenge”, so the firm worked with Amcor on a solution.

While several solutions for capping such bottles are available in the spirits industry, they are “less prevalent in the wine sector”, the company said.

As a result, Amcor’s FTS (Field Technical Services) and sales teams worked alongside the Provençal winemaker to develop the innovations this new tin closure required.

Victor Verhoef, marketing director at Maison Saint Aix, said: “Amcor was our first choice for its quality and innovation.

“Amcor never stopped listening to us and provided unwavering support throughout the entire process.  After a nine-month search, we believe we have found perfection—an ideal closure that perfectly fits the necks of these bottles.

“It also has a luxurious finish and a flawless print result that matches the design of our entire range.”
