BindEthics scales 100% bio-based Ecohesive adhesive for 2,000-Litre packaging production, 85% carbon cut

The commercial scale-up comes as traditional urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins face increasing regulatory scrutiny, with new EU REACH regulations effective 6 August 2026 introducing stricter formaldehyde emission limits of 0.062 mg/m³ for wood-based products.

UK – BindEthics has scaled its Ecohesive formaldehyde-free adhesive from laboratory to industrial production, achieving 40-litre batches with a validated 2,000-litre pathway, enabling up to 90 percent of engineered wood packaging and furniture to become fully recyclable while reducing carbon footprint by 85 percent.

The Leeds-based sustainable adhesive company’s flagship product, derived from purified industrial bio-waste including brewing by-products, is designed as a drop-in solution compatible with existing industrial mixing and pressing equipment, eliminating the need for manufacturers to invest in new production infrastructure. 

The adhesive targets engineered wood applications including furniture panels, construction boards, Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and acoustic panels, with commercial discussions representing potential industrial demand exceeding 6,000 tonnes. 

85% Carbon Reduction and REACH Compliance Drive Market Interest

The commercial scale-up comes as traditional urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins face increasing regulatory scrutiny, with new EU REACH regulations effective 6 August 2026 introducing stricter formaldehyde emission limits of 0.062 mg/m³ for wood-based products. 

Ecohesive eliminates formaldehyde emissions entirely while delivering an 85 percent reduction in CO₂ footprint compared to conventional adhesives. 

The adhesive is being tested for freight and logistics applications under demanding transport conditions, with initial commercial batches earmarked for industrial trials with Tier 1 manufacturers and specialist eco-plywood fabricators across Europe. 

The construction sector, which accounts for approximately 11 percent of global CO₂ emissions from building materials, stands to benefit significantly from this innovation, as formaldehyde-free adhesives also enable the recycling of engineered wood products at end-of-life, contributing to circular economy goals.

Collaborative Scale-Up and Future Applications

BindEthics has received scale-up and commercial support from the Biorenewables Development Centre in York through its European Regional Development Programme, and is collaborating with Bangor University for advanced testing and validation. 

Chemique Adhesives is supporting the scale-up to large-scale production. 

The company’s proprietary technology platform enables the transformation of various industrial bio-waste streams into high-performance adhesives, with applications extending beyond engineered wood to packaging and labelling. 

As the EU’s Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan accelerate the shift away from fossil-based materials, Ecohesive’s drop-in compatibility ensures that manufacturers can transition to sustainable alternatives without major capital expenditure.
