The shift towards biobased adhesives aligns with broader trends in the bioeconomy and circular economy.

GLOBAL – The global adhesives market is undergoing a sustainable transformation, with biobased adhesives emerging as a key growth driver.
According to a new market study released by Ceresana, adhesives made from renewable raw materials such as sugar, starch, and soy already account for over 15% of total global adhesive production.
This figure is expected to grow significantly, with market revenues projected to reach approximately US$4.5 billion by 2034.
The shift towards biobased adhesives aligns with broader trends in the bioeconomy and circular economy, as manufacturers seek to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and minimize their environmental impact.
These “green” adhesives are increasingly being blended with traditional petrochemical adhesives to lower carbon footprints and meet rising regulatory and consumer demands for sustainability.
Growth is particularly strong in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, where annual demand is expected to increase by over 4.8%.
In Western Europe and North America, growth rates are also solid, estimated at just above 3% per year.
Key application areas driving this expansion include the paper and packaging industry, the construction sector, and wood processing.
Notably, paper bags and other packaging uses alone make up nearly one-third of current global biobased adhesive sales.
With advances in additives and copolymers, biobased adhesives are no longer limited to niche or low-performance applications.
Today, they are increasingly being developed to meet industrial-grade performance requirements, offering non-toxic, solvent-free, low-emission, and in some cases, biodegradable solutions.
There is also growing interest in using agricultural waste and low-cost by-products as feedstocks, further enhancing the sustainability and circularity of these materials.
Ceresana’s study goes beyond market size projections, offering detailed analyses across 17 countries, with breakdowns by application sector and insights into economic and construction trends.
The report also includes profiles of 34 leading manufacturers, such as Cargill, Stora Enso, H.B. Fuller, Solenis, Soudal, Kerakoll, and Avebe.
As environmental regulations tighten and consumers grow more conscious of sustainability, the demand for biobased adhesives is poised to accelerate.
Manufacturers that invest in eco-friendly innovation and circular solutions are likely to gain a competitive edge in the evolving global market.
The latest data from Ceresana underscores the importance of strategic planning and sustainable product development in navigating this promising but competitive landscape.
