Bormioli Luigi launches refillable, recyclable glass lipstick for sustainable luxury beauty

The new design “evokes the lightness and elegance of a luxurious product that can be refilled in a single motion.”

ITALY — Italian glassmaker Bormioli Luigi has unveiled Swing, a refillable and recyclable glass lipstick that combines sustainability with refined design, marking the latest addition to its expanding makeup packaging portfolio.

The Swing lipstick features thin glass walls and a reduced glass content, incorporating up to 15% post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass.

Its removable central ring, made from recycled plastic, maintains the mechanical strength and signature “click” sound that consumers associate with high-end cosmetics.

The lipstick’s components can be easily disassembled for recycling, ensuring circular use.

According to the company, the new design “evokes the lightness and elegance of a luxurious product that can be refilled in a single motion,” reinforcing the brand’s commitment to both premium aesthetics and environmental responsibility.

Bormioli Luigi’s Swing concept offers a broad range of customization options, including interior or exterior lacquers, metallic and color effects, screen printing, metallization, varnishes, and glazes.

The central ring’s color and decoration can also be tailored, giving brands creative flexibility while supporting refillable product models.

“This customization concept, combined with the refillable function, allows brands to envision their products as inherently durable, precious objects,” said the company in a statement.

The launch follows the success of Bormioli Luigi’s 2023 recyclable makeup collection, which included glass packaging for lip gloss and mascara.

The Swing lipstick made its debut at Luxe Pack Monaco, held from September 29 to October 1, 2025, where it drew strong attention from luxury beauty brands seeking eco-conscious innovation.

In an interview with Packaging Insights, Simone Baratta, R&D Manager at Bormioli Luigi, emphasized that glass remains the benchmark for luxury packaging.

“In the beauty field, luxury and high-end positioning are associated with glass because of its brilliance, weight, light effects, and the complex shapes it can achieve,” Baratta said.

He added that glass offers “intrinsic sustainability” due to its inert nature and ability to be infinitely recycled without loss of quality.

Beyond makeup, Bormioli Luigi has also created refillable glass bottles and caps for luxury perfume brand Sporturno and supplied Maison Berger with glass components for its Echo and Cosy fragrance diffuser collections, further underscoring its position as a leader in sustainable, premium glass packaging design.
