Duni Group launches sealable paper bowl with 85% less plastic, 50% lower CO₂ emissions

The 50% figure suggests that for this specific bowl size and application, the paper version’s cradle-to-gate emissions are half those of the equivalent plastic bowl, even accounting for the paper’s material and manufacturing footprint.

SWEDEN – Duni Group has introduced Sealable Ronda, a new sealable paper bowl developed under the Duniform brand for ready-to-eat salads and bowl meals, comprising more than 85% lower plastic content and cutting CO₂ emissions by over 50% compared to plastic Duni bowls of a similar size.

The bowl integrates paper materials with hermetic sealing and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to extend product freshness and ensure secure handling across the distribution chain. 

The hermetic seal provides a leak-resistant, tamper-evident, and hygienic barrier that protects meals during transport and allows consumers to easily verify that a package remains unopened.

Designed for Modern Food Concepts

Designed for sushi, poke, and salads, the round format is suitable for both hot and cold dishes. 

The bowls are made from FSC-certified materials and offer printing options for branding and product information. 

Via Duniform, Duni Group provides Sealable Ronda as part of a comprehensive system, including compatible films and machinery to improve production efficiency and logistics.

The Food Waste Connection

Modified atmosphere packaging replaces the air inside a sealed package with a specific gas mixture (typically nitrogen and carbon dioxide) to slow oxidation and microbial growth. 

For fresh salads and ready meals, MAP can extend shelf life from days to over a week, reducing the likelihood that food spoils before purchase or consumption. 

Marie Davies, category manager for trays and films at Duni Group, explained that reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways to lower the climate impact of food. 

She noted that with Sealable Ronda, the company enables customers to keep ready-to-eat meals fresh for longer while offering a secure, sealed solution in paper, strengthening both food safety and confidence throughout the value chain.

Paper vs. Plastic: The Carbon Calculation

A 50% CO₂ reduction is significant, but the comparison matters. The baseline is a plastic Duni bowl of similar size. 

Plastic production is energy-intensive and uses fossil feedstocks. Paper production uses renewable fibres but requires more water and can have higher transport emissions due to greater weight.

When the Bowl Seals Itself
