The Embio launch offers a plant-derived substitute for conventional plastics.

UAE – Emirates Biotech has unveiled Embio, its new line of UAE-produced PolyLactic Acid (PLA) biopolymers, marking a major step in expanding regional access to renewable, compostable materials.
The launch positions the company as one of the Middle East’s emerging suppliers of bioplastics, reinforcing the UAE’s ambition to lead in sustainable manufacturing and circular economy solutions.
The Embio name reflects both the company’s Emirates identity and its biotechnology-driven approach.
With the introduction of the range, Emirates Biotech has begun pre-marketing across the Middle East, offering locally stocked PLA for faster delivery and lower minimum order quantities, a move expected to eliminate long lead times historically associated with sourcing PLA from Europe or Asia.
“Our launch of Embio products marks a major milestone in our journey to make renewable and compostable plastics accessible across the Middle East,” said Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech.
“Embio stands as a symbol of our commitment to innovation, reducing dependence on fossil resources, and supporting the region in building a circular economy.”
The Embio portfolio features multiple PLA grades designed for rigid and flexible packaging, coated paperboard, fibers, nonwovens and 3D printing.
The company emphasizes that all grades offer high clarity, strength and ease of processing, while delivering a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional plastics.
The materials are both recyclable and industrially compostable, and do not leave behind persistent microplastics.
Prashant Lohade, Sales Development Manager, noted that maintaining PLA inventory within the UAE is a key differentiator.
“With Embio grades now available locally, customers can access PLA in smaller volumes and benefit from shorter lead times. This marks an important milestone for companies in the Middle East looking to integrate sustainable materials into their production lines.”
Customers will receive technical support for trials and application development.
Watid Watanyupaisan, Technical Solutions Manager, said the materials were engineered to run smoothly on existing equipment, “Embio grades offer versatility, efficiency and reliability across a wide range of processing technologies.”
Product Manager Christophe Enkiri added that each grade meets strict food-contact, bio-based and compostability standards, ensuring that performance and sustainability “coexist without compromise.”
The launch follows Emirates Biotech’s June announcement of a supply agreement with Swiss engineering firm Sulzer to equip its upcoming Falcon PLA plant.
The deal covers lactide formation, purification and polymerization systems essential for PLA production.
With investment in the project now exceeding US$90 million, Emirates Biotech says it is entering the execution phase of establishing one of the region’s first large-scale PLA production facilities.
As the UAE advances toward its Net Zero 2050 goals, the Embio launch and the Falcon PLA project signal a growing regional commitment to bio-based industries and next-generation sustainable materials.
