Esah Tea pioneers microplastic-free cotton tea bags for a cleaner brew

INDIA – Esah Tea, a leading direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand from Assam, has launched microplastic-free cotton tea bags, marking a significant step forward in sustainable tea production.

These innovative tea bags are 100% chemical-free, biodegradable, and handmade, reflecting the brand’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and customer health. Priced at just INR 5 per bag, they are among the most economical options on the market.

The introduction of these microplastic-free tea bags is a direct response to alarming research from McGill University, which found that conventional plastic tea bags release a staggering 11.9 billion harmful microplastic particles per cup.

The health risks associated with microplastic consumption are well-documented, with studies linking them to cellular damage, immune system disruption, neurotoxicity, reproductive issues, and even cancer.

Bijit Sarma, founder and CEO of Esah Tea, emphasized the broader impact of this launch, “At Esah Tea, we see ourselves as custodians of a centuries-old rich tea heritage.

“Introducing our microplastic-free cotton tea bags is not just a product launch—it’s a paradigm shift in how we approach tea production and consumption. We are addressing critical health and environmental issues while enhancing the tea-drinking experience. This launch exemplifies our belief that exceptional quality, responsible production, and environmental stewardship can and must coexist in perfect harmony.

“I am deeply thankful to our R&D team, whose tireless efforts have brought our toxin-free tea bags to fruition. We invite conscious consumers to sip responsibly and sustainably with Esah Tea.”

Esah Tea’s product line includes over 20 variants, such as Honey Lemon Green Tea, Organic Assam Breakfast Tea, Organic Handmade Black Tea, and flavor-infused options like Organic Blue Tea, Organic Lychee Black Tea, Organic Chamomile Green Tea, Organic Peach Green Tea, Organic Vanilla Chai, and Rose Lychee Black Tea.

The brand also offers instant chai options like Cardamom, Masala, and Kadak chai, as well as the health-focused Instant Mango Turmeric Latte.

Priced between INR 199 and INR 399, Esah Tea products are available nationwide through online channels, including the official website and major eCommerce platforms like Amazon.

Additionally, the brand maintains a presence in select retail stores across major cities, including Delhi and Gurgaon.

Since its establishment in 2021, Esah Tea has seen remarkable growth. Initially available in just ten premium stores, the brand now has over 600 stores nationwide and exports to more than 10 countries, including the USA, South Korea, Abu Dhabi, and the UK.

With a growing customer base of over 100,000 individuals online and offline, Esah Tea’s strategy of offering free in-store tea tastings has received positive feedback and encouraged immediate purchases.

Looking ahead, Esah Tea has ambitious plans for expansion and sustainability. The brand aims to reach 5,000 outlets across India by 2024 and is committed to converting over 20,000 acres of land in Assam to organic tea cultivation. Additionally, they plan to onboard more than 1,000 local small tea growers by 2025.
