GERMANY – The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) International Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee as the new Director General, effective 1 October 2024.

With over 20 years of experience in public policy, climate change, and sustainable development, Dr. Bhattacharjee has worked with governments, NGOs, academia, and the private sector worldwide.

Her previous roles include positions at the United Nations and the Reserve Bank of India, alongside academic experience.

She holds a Master of Philosophy in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Iowa State University.

Stuart Valentine, Chair of the FSC International Board of Directors, expressed confidence in her leadership, highlighting that her international development and leadership expertise would be instrumental during this crucial period of FSC’s growth.

Dr. Bhattacharjee emphasized the urgency of addressing the global climate and biodiversity crises through sustainable forest management.

She noted that the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of forests, particularly concerning forest-dependent communities, would be central to her work.

Bhattacharjee also expressed excitement about working with the FSC community to enhance forests’ contribution to sustainable development, seeing FSC’s mission as more relevant than ever.

Outgoing Director General Kim Carstensen, who led FSC for 12 years, praised FSC’s significant contributions to a sustainable planet.

He stated that FSC had successfully balanced the world’s need for forest products with the protection of forests and expressed confidence that Dr. Bhattacharjee’s expertise and vision would guide the organization through the challenges ahead.

Peter Alele, Africa Regional Director, welcomed Dr. Bhattacharjee’s appointment, noting that her leadership would be key to expanding forest protection under the FSC label and promoting a sustainable future for Africa’s forests. Alele also mentioned a recent milestone—the approval of FSC’s legal entity in Africa, which marked a new chapter for the organization in the region.

He stressed that FSC would continue to advance its mission of responsible forest management through collaboration and strategic partnerships.

Dr. Bhattacharjee’s appointment ushers in a new phase for FSC, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the organization as it promotes responsible management and long-term resilience of the world’s forests.
