Frugalpac partners with ITC to launch eco-friendly paper bottles in India, South Asia

ASIA – British sustainable packaging innovator Frugalpac has signed a letter of intent with ITC Limited’s Packaging & Printing Business, South Asia’s leading value-added packaging converter, to introduce its eco-friendly Frugal Bottles to India.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the region’s drinks industry.

The Frugal Bottle, made from 94% recycled paperboard and a food-grade pouch, is five times lighter than glass bottles and boasts an 84% lower carbon footprint than traditional glass bottles.

Its water footprint is four times lower, making it a highly sustainable packaging alternative.

The partnership aims to promote and grow demand for these low-carbon bottles in India, with plans to establish local production eventually.

The announcement comes just ahead of ProWine Mumbai, where Frugalpac will exhibit its innovative bottles and the machinery behind their production.

India’s alcoholic beverage industry, projected to reach US$55 billion by the end of this year, represents a significant market opportunity. Frugalpac and ITC aim to appeal to Indian consumers who are increasingly focused on sustainability.

The initiative aligns with ITC’s “Sustainability 2.0” plan, which emphasizes combating climate change, supporting sustainable livelihoods, ensuring water security, and fostering a circular economy for post-consumer packaging waste.

ITC’s CEO of the Packaging and printing Business, Mr. S.N. Venkataraman, commented, “Sustainability has always been a cornerstone of ITC. As we celebrate our centenary next year, partnering with Frugalpac reinforces our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, eco-friendly packaging solutions for India and South Asia.

“The Frugal Bottle, which significantly reduces both carbon and water footprints, is a testament to innovation driving sustainable growth.”

Frugalpac’s CEO, Malcolm Waugh, highlighted India’s potential as a key market, “India ranks sixth globally in alcoholic beverage revenue, making it essential for us to collaborate with a company like ITC that shares our sustainability goals.

“ITC’s extensive experience and market reach make them the ideal partner to bring our paper bottle revolution to South Asia. We’re confident Indian consumers and brands will embrace this shift from glass to paper bottles.”

Frugalpac’s presence at ProWine Mumbai, supported by the UK Department for Business and Trade, showcases the global momentum behind the world’s first commercially available paper bottle for wines and spirits.

With over 128 SKUs already launched worldwide, the Frugal Bottle is now poised to transform South Asia.
