Skanem Africa officially opens its news facility in Limuru, Kenya

KENYA – Skanem Africa has officially opened its new, eco-friendly production facility in Tilisi, Limuru, Kenya, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in packaging.

The inauguration event was graced by Ms. Jane Karuku, Chairperson of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), who highlighted the company’s role in advancing sustainable industrialization in Kenya.

She was joined by key KAM figures, including Vice Chairperson Hitesh Mediratta and Acting CEO Tobias Alando, along with other notable guests.

With over 100 years of experience in the global packaging industry, Skanem operates five production sites across India and Africa, including two in Kenya and Tanzania.

The company specializes in producing eco-friendly packaging solutions such as self-adhesive, shrink sleeve, and wet glue labels.

It is a proud member of KAM’s Paper and Paperboard sector and has a dedicated workforce of over 140 employees committed to creating sustainable solutions for its customers.

During her address, Ms. Karuku praised Skanem for its proactive approach to addressing pressing environmental issues such as plastic pollution and climate change.

She noted that the company’s use of recyclable and biodegradable materials positions it as a leader in eco-conscious production, catering to the growing demand for environmentally responsible packaging.

Karuku also encouraged the broader manufacturing sector in Kenya to adopt sustainable practices, reinforcing the country’s potential to become a pioneer in green manufacturing.

Skanem’s new facility in Limuru is certified under the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) system, which recognizes buildings that significantly reduce energy, water, and material use.

Compared to conventional buildings, the plant is projected to save 46% in energy, 48% in water, and 48% in embodied energy.

This aligns with Skanem’s broader sustainability goals, which include reducing carbon emissions, optimizing energy usage, and using more recycled materials in production.

The new facility marks a major step in Skanem Africa’s growth strategy and underscores its dedication to sustainable manufacturing practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.

In October, the company inaugurated a new warehouse in Uganda’s Namanve Industrial Park in Mukono District.

The company says this warehouse, equipped with office spaces and ample storage for finished goods, marks a significant milestone in Skanem’s five-year presence in Uganda.

While the company has maintained a sales presence, this new facility enhances its ability to serve local and regional clients with improved lead times and services.

Skanem’s top leadership, including Group CEO Maryne Lemvik, Managing Director Sachen Gudka, and Head of Sales Uganda Olive Kunihira, attended the inauguration ceremony.
