UK – Greiner Packaging has launched a new high-tech production line to manufacture recycled PET (rPET) packaging for dietary supplement vials, strengthening its partnership with health brand Orthomol.
The company has been supplying Orthomol with brown vials since 2022 and is now scaling up both product quality and capacity through this upgraded line.
The state-of-the-art production setup includes a real-time camera inspection system featuring 18 cameras that monitor each vial for geometry, color, and potential inclusions.
To ensure the highest hygiene standards, the system is paired with a laminar flow unit that minimizes airborne contamination from dust particles.
“With 18 cameras and an innovative laminar flow system, we guarantee that every vial meets our strict quality standards and fulfills Orthomol’s high requirements,” said Daniel Holspach, Key Account Manager at Greiner Packaging.
“Sustainability is also a top priority for Orthomol, and we’re proud to collaborate on packaging solutions that are both eco-friendly and forward-looking for the industry.”
The shift to rPET is part of a broader move toward sustainable packaging, aligning with Orthomol’s objective to eventually produce the vials entirely from recycled materials.
Dr. Jörn Weißenfeld, Executive Management Member at Orthomol responsible for production and sustainability, noted, “The vials are one of our most popular delivery forms worldwide. The fact that Greiner Packaging is investing with us in the sustainable further development of these vials is of great value to Orthomol.”
The push for greener packaging is gaining traction across the health and pharmaceutical sectors. Bayer, for example, recently highlighted the increasing consumer demand for environmentally sustainable packaging.
Bayer is actively exploring a wide range of sustainable formats—such as blisters, bottles, tubes, vials, syringes, and cartridges—tailored to product-specific requirements and safety standards.
To support transparency in its sustainability claims, Greiner Packaging has also introduced ‘Sustainability Passports’.
These tools provide detailed, verifiable data about the environmental performance of its plastic packaging, addressing key concerns like CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) footprint, post-consumer waste content, UK Plastic Packaging Tax compliance, and adherence to EU food safety regulations.
“Sustainable economic success is only possible through innovation and ecological responsibility,” said Rachel Sheldon, Sustainability and Innovation Manager at Greiner Packaging.
“For years, we’ve invested in the most sustainable packaging solutions, backed by independent certifications to support every claim.”
Sheldon added that Sustainability Passports—now available for most of Greiner’s plastic packaging—calculate cradle-to-gate CO₂e values using a methodology validated by TÜV Austria in accordance with ISO 14067:2018 standards.
