INDIA – Huhtamaki has launched an environmental risk assessment initiative in India to strengthen its commitment to sustainability.
This pioneering effort makes Huhtamaki the first company in the country to formally pilot nature-related impact assessments across its operations.
This year, Huhtamaki’s ten factories in India underwent biodiversity-based risk assessments using the LEAP approach, aligned with the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) guidelines.
These assessments were designed to identify business risks and opportunities linked to biodiversity, covering impacts on marine ecosystems as well as terrestrial flora and fauna.
The assessments identified three key sites requiring focused biodiversity risk mitigation efforts. These sites will undergo further opportunity mapping, with tailored biodiversity risk mitigation plans in development.
Additionally, Huhtamaki conducted water scarcity risk assessments across these factories to pinpoint priority areas for action.
By 2025, Huhtamaki aims to finalize and implement these biodiversity and water scarcity mitigation measures, underscoring its dedication to sustainable practices and resource protection.
This commitment aligns with Huhtamaki’s efforts to help customers achieve their own sustainability goals while supporting the health of the planet.
In addition, Huhtamaki recently began producing smooth molded fiber (SMF) lids at its Lurgan facility in Northern Ireland.
This expansion boosts its global SMF production capacity, complementing existing facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, and partnerships in Asia.
With over 40 years of expertise in fiber products, Huhtamaki’s advanced SMF technology guarantees high-quality, competitive products.
The company’s fiber lids feature a patented click-fit function for secure closure, and they are both home-compostable and easily recyclable.
Fredrik Davidsson, President of Fiber Foodservice E-A-O at Huhtamaki, shared his excitement about the expansion, “We’re thrilled to offer locally made smooth molded fiber lids to our customers in the UK and Ireland.
“This investment reflects our dedication to delivering sustainable packaging solutions, bolstered by Lurgan’s 70-year heritage in paper pulping.”
Huhtamaki’s fiber lids and other SMF products continue to support circularity, being both home-compostable and readily recyclable.
