Huhtamaki secures golden license for US$29.76M fiberboard plant in Egypt

EGYPT – The Egyptian Cabinet granted a golden license to Huhtamaki Egypt, enabling the establishment and operation of a state-of-the-art factory for fiberboard packaging.

This decision, made during the Cabinet’s 28th ministerial meeting, underscores Egypt’s commitment to fostering sustainable industrial growth.

The factory, spanning 21,700 square meters in Sadat City, Menoufia Governorate, will focus on producing fruit containers, cup holders, and egg cartons.

With an investment of approximately EGP 1.5 billion (US$29.76m), including €24 million (US$24.70m) in foreign funding, the facility aims to export 70% of its production to global markets while sourcing 70% of its components locally.

This initiative positions Egypt as a leader in sustainable packaging, advancing local manufacturing capabilities and introducing innovative technologies.

Huhtamaki India and Finland Embassy host Think Circle Forum

Meanwhile, Huhtamaki India, a leader in consumer packaging, concluded the second edition of the Think Circle Forum in New Delhi in collaboration with the Embassy of Finland.

Organized alongside the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the event highlighted the launch of Design for Recycling Guidance for Films and Flexible Packaging.

This initiative, part of the India Plastics Pact (IPP), addresses critical challenges in recycling flexible packaging.

The guidelines, introduced in December 2024, provide actionable steps for brands to transition to recyclable materials. They focus on mono-material designs, eliminate harmful pigments, and adopt recyclable barrier layers.

Prominent stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and think tanks, attended the forum.

A panel discussion titled Redefining the Circularity of Flexible Packaging in India featured experts such as Chinmaya Dandekar (Godrej Consumer Products), Rashi Agarwal (Banyan Nation), and Dhananjay Salunkhe (Huhtamaki India).

Salunkhe emphasized, “These guidelines mark a pivotal step in creating a circular economy for flexible packaging in India. Huhtamaki remains committed to driving awareness and supporting recyclable solutions.”

HE Kimmo Lähdevirta, Finland’s Ambassador to India, remarked, “Finland’s expertise in sustainable design, combined with India’s innovative ecosystem, can set global benchmarks for circular packaging solutions.”

Seema Arora, Deputy Director General of CII, noted, “The India Plastics Pact provides a platform to co-create sustainable practices, enabling the FMCG industry to transition toward recyclable flexible formats.”

Think Circle fosters collaboration to address challenges in packaging sustainability, aligning global efforts to achieve circularity in the value chain.
